I really think it just depends on your personal situation. We also only put things on our registry that we really need, not just a bunch of fluff items, and not the most expensive ones. In the meantime, I've been looking for some of the higher priced items at second-hand stores or online to save some money, and not ask for those items from our friends and family. We purchased the crib, changing table, and other large items ourselves and are not asking others to get these for us. We also don't expect people to get us anything, they can if they want. We can get whatever is left.

I can identify with the feeling. I sometimes feel that friends and relatives who have baby showers are very greedy, asking for $30 crib sheets, $50 bags of diapers, fancy decorations and the like when cheaper things would do just as well. Personally, my family are rather poor and so are my friends, and I am not having a baby shower at al as I wouldn't feel right with asking them to give me stuff. We are buying everything used, and it's really not very expensive to pick up the basics that way. I figure, I was a second child and absolutely everything I got was a hand-me-down, so what's wrong with starting that way? :) It's just my two cents, but I don't see the need for new and expensive things when cheaper stuff will do and I can totally see your point.

Agreed - but it's a bit of a lose/lose situation: if you have a shower you're present-hungry; if you don't people still buy you stuff, but it's usually rubbish you don't need :S

To me a baby shower is like a birthday or Christmas. It's a chance to pick things out that you wouldn't normally by yourself. :)

I am from England and I don't here of that many people having them over here, my whole life I have known 1 person to have one, but she bought her own pram , cot etc she just asked for clothes.
I personally couldn't do it myself but I understand if people are really skint, and maybe they have no family who can help. luckily for me my mum buys 1 big thing my partners mum buys one big thing and we just get all the rest on our own - I would starve before I asked my friends and family for expensive things but thats just me, I understand where u r coming from though.
