Q: Why do some women have ultrasounds done so early?

I've seen quite a few pics on this site with ultrasound images from 5, 4 or even 3 weeks! I didn't even know that was possible to see anything that early. Are there special circumstances that docs would do that so early, or is it because you insist on getting one done to confirm the pregnancy? I'm just curious because I've lost two pregnancies and am wondering when I'll get my first ultrasound. I don't think I'll be able to be the least bit excited until I can see and/or hear something. Please share your stories!

Most doctors will not do a first ultrasound until about 8 or 9 weeks, unless you have a history/showing signs of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or other complications. Some doctors will do an early ultrasound if the pregnancy was a result of fertility treatments. Also, some doctors just like to do early ultrasounds to confirm the pregnancy. The doctor that delivered my daughter did an ultrasound on me at 5 weeks 6 days and we saw the heartbeat. However, the doctor I am seeing with this pregnancy doesn't do an ultrasound earlier than 8 weeks - unless there has been a problem. I thought I was going to die before I made it to the 8 week mark because I was so anxious. However, it seems that a lot of women go in at 5-6 weeks, see nothing, and then have to live with the fear that something may be wrong, only to go back at 7-8 weeks and everything is just fine. A lot of worry for nothing. 7-8 weeks seems to be ideal. By that stage, the ultrasound can give you a lot more concrete info
