Well speaking as a woman with the name Madelin, :), I love it. Everyone calls me Madi.
Your cousin doesn't have dibs on the name... honestly if you love it you should have it too!

I would caution you about asking for permission to use the name unless you and your husband are willing to use a different name. If she says she doesn't want you to use the name you've kind of backed yourself into a corner to not use it.
If you truly want to name your daughter this name then it is your right. I would suggest, when your ready to share the name to send them a letter simply saying how you love the name, you are using it in honor of your mom etc. It gives them the heads up, out of politeness but still leaves you free to use the name if they don't give you permission!

I would use it. Yes, your cousin picked the name first but that doesn't give her "dibs" for life, and your reasons for using it (as a tribute to your mom) are good. And if you're planning on calling your daughter Maddy there wouldn't be any confusion. It might even be something for the two Madelyns to bond over, which is nice. Good luck!

I love Madison but my husband hates it.... We initially liked Ashlyn but I have really always liked more traditional names. My cousin is a decade older and growing up I always looked up to her. Weird family dynamics. We r the only girl cousins and she was the golden first born grandchild. I have long since stepped out of her shadow but still get compared to her which might make naming my daughter the same name a little weird. However, you know how it feels when the name is just perfect? Oh and my mom would be so so so happy and my husband loves it.... Arrghhhh so tough!

I would ask your cousin if she would mind. If you don't live near each other I wouldn't think she would care and her daughter is older. Otherwise how about another name that ends in Lyn. Kaylyn, Adellyn,
