Q: Paying for 20 week scan (uk)

Hey ladies,so had my first appointment with the midwife today and as we were going through everything she mentioned that once you've been and had your 20 week scan the hospital will then send you a bill in the post. As there was so much to take in I didn't realise until id gone to ask how much this costs?!

I just always assumed that this was free, me and my husband both work full time and don't claim any benefits.

I live in Gloucestershire (Cheltenham Hospital) can anyone shed any light on this for me please? :)

Lou_85 I have heard of people paying in other trusts, my friends have had babies Coventry & Warwickshire university hospital and there was also a charge. Id be interested to know where the money goes, i wonder if it goes to the government? The cheque was made out to the hospital trust for your info :)

Kelliers it must have been annoying and frustrating when you're so excited to not feel like your doctor cares especially when you could swap them for anothe doctor, unlike the uk. I think for many professionals they see pregnant women all day and so it's not as special for then if that makes any sense,.

Those thermals are so cheap for them to print-it's ok though, we get charged an arm and a leg for other ridiculous things. My doctor rushed us through our 14 week appt-I was so put off I told my husband I almost want to find another one! She didn't say anything about what to expect in the next month or how much weight I should aim to gain or anything. Just threw the doppler on my tummy, said the hb sounds good and gave us a referral for the anatomy scan. Grr...it sucks to not feel like your doctor cares about you. This is my first and we struggled through so many fertility treatments so I just wanted someone else to be excited, too :)

Hi, I work in a hospital and was in the litigation dept (claims) for 2 years, I've never heard of people paying for scan pics up until today. There is a new initiative with the NHS called Transoeming your Care and I think they are looking to bring in to affect donations for scan pics. My auntie has had a 20week scan recently and was never asked to pay.

Ccbear, I would love to know and I'm going to be asking questions tomorrow in my work, where is the money going to that they are asking to be paid for the scans? The NHS is non profit organisation and we are not allowed to make any income. Can't wait to see what answer il get tomorrow in work lol

You're welcome! I guess every midwife does thing differently but I only had my blood pressure checked at my first appt, I did a urine sample at the appt with the 12 week scan at the hospital and went for the blood tests straight after.

Hi,

Thanks for the answer! I did think it strange paying for the 20 week scan. My proper midwife was on a course so had a different midwife today. She did rush through it all to be honest and didn't even tell me how many weeks I was or take my urine sample. Was really looking forward to getting all booked in for the scan also but im having a home visit from the midwife to go through all the other paper work.

Thanks so much :)

It is kind of sad kelliers and it can vary from area to area in the uk but there's generally a cost, it's a reasonably small amount, but not to everyone I guess. There are just your normal black and white thermals too.

PS we paid £7 and got 1 pic at 12 weeks and 3 at the 20 week. To be honest she should have only given us 2 at the 20 week as that's all we paid for but she'd already printed it out :)

You have to pay for the pictures?! That makes me kind of sad! Here no one would dream of showing you your baby and not giving you a souvenir to take home. Is it a special high-quality photo?

Hi! I also had all my scans at Cheltenham. The midwife didn't explain this well to you. You do not pay anything for the scans, but if you get a picture at the 12 and 20 week scans you will need To pay for the pictures at te 20 week scan. When you get the appt letter through for your 20 week scan it will explain this, it will also say you can only pay by postal order or cheque. Hope this helps and everything is going well! Any more questions don't hesitate to ask :)
