Q: When does the doctor use the Doppler?

This is my second pregnancy but I can't remember when the doctor uses the Doppler to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time? How far along were you when your doctor first let you hear it? (not through ultrasound..just with Doppler)

I am 17 weeks and my docs still haven't used the Doppler on me. The nurse said they will probably do it at my next appointment (19 weeks), when we do our big ultrasound with all the measurements and, hopefully, a gender reveal. I have seen the heartbeat on all the ultrasounds though.

You can ask but that doesn't mean they will. I asked at 10 weeks and she said they won't do it until past 12 weeks. I guess they made too many women upset and had to send them for last minute referrals for ultrasounds or something but she wouldn't do it even though we'd just seen the baby a few days early at the fertility clinic.

Mine used it at 8 weeks (they were unsure if they would be able to hear--but we could!) Then it has been used at every appointment so far thereafter.

Mine didnt use a doppler until i was 24 weeks! i brought a home one around 13 weeks so i could use it myself. My midwives are terrible to be honest they just dont seem to care. Hope you get a better experience. x

With my first she tried first appointment and got it straight away but it turnt out I was further along that we thought. With my second I asked but it was too early to hear anything, you can always ask them even if you don't hear anything :)

Mine wouldn't even try until 14 weeks to avoid not hearing it and causing a panic.

My midwife didn't know wth she was doing and has managed to freak me out twice so far. But she wasn't able to pick up the heartbeat at my 12 week appointment so she had to use the mini ultrasound machine

My dr. usually will start trying to hear it around 8-9 weeks. I heard it myself on my home doppler at 7 1/2 weeks this time. With the last baby, i didn't hear it until 9 weeks. I think when you hear it depends alot on how it's positioned in there, and where. I think this one is more towards the front this time, probably why i heard it sooner.
