Q: Twins Question.....they DO run in every generation of my family....

Hi everyone, okay so my question is: How likely would it be that twins were missed at my early dating scan? We went in on October 15th and we were told I looked to be about 7 weeks along. We saw the heartbeat on a tiny little flickering bean and also what looked like another "lump" attached to the side of my uterus...when we asked the midwife she quickly dismissed it and said that she's said all she's able to :/ now that being said the only way my midwife knows how far along I am is from me telling her what the tech said! There were no follow up forms or anything. I'm now 14 weeks along with my 1st baby and have had a noticeable belly since 10 weeks, I have a home doppler and in the last week or so we have found what sound like two heartbeats, one registering at 150-160 and the other 135-150, I've also been feeling flutters for a couple days now. Anyone have experience with this? I go for a check-up on the 9th so I will mention it then but for now it's driving me a little nut

if your midwife won't do another scan for you, depending on where you live there are 3d/4d ultrasound places that can do a scan for you. I know where I live they do them as early as 8 weeks and they are relatively inexpensive...like $49

The 18-21 week scan isn't related to the NT, it's just the anatomy scan. The bloodwork and scan from the NT are one test and the anatomy scan is to make sure baby is developing, that the heart and kidneys and stomach look good, that the brain is fully forming, etc. If you missed the window for the NT scan you may have to just wait until about 18 weeks to find out unless you can talk your doctor into an extra ultrasound.

Thank you everyone! I feel like I'm crazy for thinking this way...I will call my midwife ASAP and schedule the NT screening if I still can, I guess it's not untrue that I've changed my mind haha just not for the reasons they might think ;) I'll let you know how it goes!

It definitely sounds like you could have 2 sweeties in there! I would agree with the other ladies to request the NT scan now before you start running out of time! :)

I'm surprised that they didn't double check you for multiples. I'm at high risk bc we currently have 5 sets of fraternal twins walking around in my family (fraternal are hereditary, identical are not) all on the maternal side. So, I'm double checked during the first trimester. I would recommend getting a second ultrasound, however, the other posters are correct: in terms of accuracy, the NT scan loses reliability after 13 weeks 6 days. Gl!

I just checked back on my records and what I had was the triple screen. Consists of the NT scan done between 11 and 14 weeks and then another scan done a few weeks later. But you're still with in the time frame.

Its actually a combination of two scans, the first between 12 and 15 weeks and the second between 18 and 25 I think. I could be wrong about the dates of the second one but I know mine were at 12 weeks (the earliest they could do it) and the second at 19 weeks. You're not too late yet. Just tell them you changed your mind. I dont think they can say no. I've had it done every time, when I was pregnant at 23, 35, and this time at 38. I'm one of those people that feels you can never be too prepared. Lol The blood work won't be accurate if its twins, so they may try to talk you into thinking its not worth doing it, but the measurements are still valuable and you will definitely know how many babies are in there!

Hi KenpoMommy :) as silly as it sounds we opted to pass on the NT screening because our midwife said we are such a low risk pregnancy that our risks are next to nothing. That was at 10 weeks.....after popping so soon after and now feeling my uterus just below my belly button I feel like maybe I should request the screening after all! I'm happy that Baby's healthy at least but we'd also like to be able to prepare if there are two!
