Q: Gagging

Please can someone tell me how long the overactive gag function last for?
I can't brush my teeth, eat or take pills without gagging and fighting the need to actually throw up.
I'm 9wks +4 at the moment and the actual morning sickness has subsided a lot but this is such a pain in the butt.
I'm starving but it's so difficult to eat.

Hi Sianny! We are exactly the same right now at 9 wks +5. :) I had this problem suuuper bad before I got on this medicine called Diclegis. It is a LIFESAVER. I still get this gagging thing occasionally but not neaaarrrly as bad as it was before. It is completely safe and grade A. It's newer on the market in the U.S. So not many have heard of it but it's been around in Europe for ages (not sure where you are from though). I'd ask your doctor about it! It truly has helped me function so much better! It is basically just B6 and Unisom put together. Works great! :)

MrsAmanda Thank you for the chin to chest method. The pill went down much easier with only minor gagging.

Also, for pill taking, it helps if you can get the pill as far back to your throat as possible and put your chin down to your chest when you swallow. It helps open up your throat. Tilting your head back actually narrows your esophagus.

Sweet Jesus, I'm 33 weeks now and my gag reflex is STILL very hypersensitive. I have to be super careful when I brush my teeth to not gag myself or I will 9 times out of 10 end up puking. Ugh. I'm just hoping it goes back to normal after she comes.

With my last pregnancy I would sneeze and it would trigger my gag reflex and I'd have to run to the bathroom as fast as I could. Really hoping it's not that bad this time.

My over active gag reflex lasted until i delivered. It was horrible! Any time I had to take my vitamins or brush my teeth I knew to stand close to a toilet. I feel your pain on this issue!

Oh joy. Well at least it's stopping me from stuffing my face all the time. thankfully I've ordered a folic acid vitamin spray so no more pill taking gagging sessions.

I've read it has something to do with 'stuff' from your nose sliding down your throat into your stomach *gag*
I didn't believe it but just a moment ago I had that (why are there no nice words for this) mucus lump stuck at the back of my throat and realised its been happening for a few days now because I catch myself doing the 'wannahokalugi' growl to shift it when I'm alone. Classy, I know.

I'm going to go throw up now...
