Q: Would progesterone help if I'm told I have a threatened miscarriage due to low HcG??

I was going in to check HcG levels every 3-4 days, and from 5-9 weeks they were consistently increasing only 50%. We saw the heartbeat at 6w3d. In researching, I found that women who are older (I turn 40 next month) tend to have lower levels of progesterone, which is what causes the HcG to be lower. Has anyone been told or heard of doctors giving progesterone to women who have low rising HcG levels? My doctors told me that they only give it if I either had infertility issues, or if I had previous miscarriages.. I'm so frustrated with them, as I kept asking about it and of course ended with a miscarriage at 8w5d (which happens to be exactly when my 2nd period should've come). I was told this showed I miscarried because the lack of progesterone, which is there to protect the pregnancy, then allowed my hormones to take over and expel the pregnancy. Any feedback would be appreciated..

I am 41 yrs old (8wks 3 days pregnant) and taking progesterone. My Dr. put me on because my levels were low but never mentioned anything about HCG levels. Mine were more than doubling though the last time I was checked so hopefully this will give you a little more info.

if your progesterone is too low taking a supplement will help, but taking it still cant promise a viable pregnancy

Thanks for answering.. So low rising hcg does not necessarily mean low progesterone? I was under the impression that it was linked?? And I wonder why my doctor's didn't test for my level of progesterone at the same time the hcg test was being done..

progesterone will not stop a miscarriage from happening, in women with low progesterone it helps because with out progesterone the body thinks its time for Af and will cause uterine contractions and shed your lining causing pregnancy loss. Sadly there are no medications to help a woman with hcg issues I suffered a loss at 11 weeks after seeing my babies heart beat 3 times, my hcg was slowly increasing but not doubling. On a happier note some women w slow rising hcg do just fine and have healthy babies ! Good luck
