Q: Are 8 week ultrasounds common?

I will be 8 weeks when I go to my first prenatal visit. Should I expect an ultrasound?

Yes. They did one with my first daughter - With this one, when I called them, I told them I didn't want to come in until 11-12 weeks, because a first ultrasound at 8 weeks is stupid. Yes, if you're a first time parent, it's great.

This is my third pregnancy, second baby, and I know what I need to look our for in regards to my pregnancy being healthy, there's no reason for me to take time off work for a silly ultrasound to go "yep. you're pregnant. there it is" - I would rather wait and see baby actually looking like a baby at 12 weeks, then a tiny blob at 8 weeks.

I'm in Canada and have generally had ultrasounds around the 8-9 week mark with all of my pregnancies (except my chemical which ended too early). I asked my doctor for one and she requisitioned it as a "dating ultrasound" to confirm how far along I was. It isn't common practice here to automatically have one, but I don't think it hurts to ask for one - especially if you say you aren't positive on your dates.

I am from the US. My doctor did a "confirmation of pregnancy" appointment at 9 weeks. At my first appointment they did a transvaginal ultrasound to confirm that the pregnancy was viable and we talked to the doctor for a little bit. Our next appointment will be between 12 and 13 weeks (which is next week already, yay!) and they will not be doing a scan, we will just be talking and they will be getting a detailed medical history.

Depends which country your from. I'm from Australia all medical is free and we don't pay for scans. I had weekly from 5w-12w then 20, 17, 28, 32, 34. So it really does depends on where your from to what advise people can give you. :-)

If this is at your gp surgery to 'book you in' then no. They usually just do all the paperwork and take medical history etc. Scan at nhs hospital usually happens later at 11-14 weeks. You can pay a private clinic for a scan or various blood tests for chromosomal screening but it can be pricey. Hope that helps and congratulations! X
