What a long, strange trip it's been...

I can't believe I am finally able to join a site like this and officially say that I am pregnant! It is so exciting, but still hard to believe.

My husband and I have been trying since we got married over a year ago. We've heard it all: "just relax, it will happen", "go on a trip", "it will happen when it is meant to", "just adopt".

Let me tell you, none of those things are what a couple wants to hear when they are trying to conceive and it's not working. When you have dreamed of not only having a child, but experiencing pregnancy your whole life, you have to push these words of advice aside and wait and hope and pray and have faith. It can be very emotionally draining.

Last February my OBGYN told me that I wouldn't be able to get pregnant on my own. That's literally what they told me verbatim on the phone. It was super encouraging...not. So I called "the guys upstairs" as they referred to them and started on this fertility journey. That's when we met Dr. E. We LOVE Dr. E. He's not an overly warm guy, but he has this calming presence that immediately put us both at ease. It is also reassuring when you see a huge, overflowing basket full of Christmas cards (the ones people get from websites with their kid's pictures on them) sitting on his desk. All pictures of babies he helped "create" I guess you could say.

After the lots of testing and blood work we found out that there was absolutely nothing wrong with either of us. We were perfect in every way and had no reason for this not to be working on it's own, so we fell into the unexplained infertility catagory which is a very scary place to be. I felt like if I knew what the problem was then we could fix it. There was no problem at all. So Dr. E recommended IUI. The first round did not take. We were heartbroken.

In late August we went through round 2, and let's just say that all the odds were in our favor this time. We did not tell anyone about this IUI. Last Wednesday I started having the worst cramps of my life. The only thing I can compare them to is contractions. They came in waves and they hurt terribly. Since I have never experienced that before, I decided it was time to test.

The next day was Thursday and was the day Aunt Flow was due...by they end of my work day, she hadn't shown up...so I stopped by the drugstore and bought some HPTs and figured I would give it a go. When I got home, I took one test and was shocked to see that it was positive! It was one of the happiest moments of my life.

I went to Target and found a bib with a turtle on it that said "Worth the Wait". Perfect. I waited impatiently for my husband to get home and when he finally did I said, "So I bought these at the store today, I saw them and couldn't resist." Then I held up the bib. He had a confused look on his face and then I said, "We are going to need them in May!" He was just as elated as I was. It was wonderful.

Yesterday I had to go for a blood pregnancy test. I just got the results and they were positive! More blood work tomorrow and then the first ultrasound at week 6. Praying that we make it that far and that we see a heartbeat!
