My Journal

36 weeks and so ready

I have recently turned into a baby-growing blob. My new daytime habitat? The couch. Occasional readjustments are accompanied by groans and whimpers. A proliferation of pillows is slowly pushing my husband out of the bed. I'm down to two pairs of shoes that fit, and my legs look like sand-stuffed stockings. There is no clear distinction between the end of my calf and the beginning of my foot.

My belly is itchy where new stretchmarks make their way upwards from a focal point at my underwear line. The stairs to my apartment have never felt so numerous. I can sleep 12 hours and wake up tired. I'm not very hungry anymore, except at meals. I still haven't had any cravings. But I'm always hot and dying of thirst with this summer sun.

For about two weeks now I haven't done laundry or cooked anything that took more than 10 minutes.

Even my maternity pants feel tight; the elastic band doesn't help with circulation in my legs. Dresses are my clothing of choice, but I only have three that fit, and no shoes to match that leave room for my swollen feet.

But the baby dropped and I can breath again. My hips are sore and widening as a consequence, but a welcome one since it means baby will be here soon.

My husband and I keep saying, "this baby will never arrive" to help with the impatience. It gets harder to pretend as the due date gets closer. Her crib and changing table are set up. For practice, I've diapered everything that will let me. Her little clothes are hanging in the closet. The bag for the hospital is packed. It's actually overpacked.

I'm making my arrangements at work; training my intern, delegating other assignments to volunteering colleagues, and working ahead as much as possible.

I have a thousand thank-you notes to write for the baby shower gifts, but I haven't bought the cards yet. I did buy stamps though.

I'm looking forward to working out again in a few months, and sharing a pitcher of sangria with friends.

I'm looking forward to snuggling my darling and bathing her and showing her the world. I'll read the hungry hungry caterpillar every day if she wants. I'll nurse her and cook her food. I'll wash her diapers. My husband and I will pray for her every morning and night.
