Q: Would the fetus still be safe after a failed abortion using Cytotec?

I used 8 Cytotec tablets orally and vaginally to abort on Jan. 10, 2014 but didn't bleed. I had u/s on Jan.13, 2014 and showed still pregnant at 5 weeks and 6 days but fetus has no heartbeat. OB/GYN told me to come back for another ultrasound on Jan. 25, 2014 for fetal viability. If fetus will have heartbeat on the next u/s appointment and pregnancy will be continued, will there be possible defects physically or mentally to the fetus? What are those possible defects?

to Luckymommyto5: I'm so sorry to hear that, I think you are a strong woman. Now, I'm ready to face my responsibility despite of some problems with my boyfriend. My parents wanted to meet him in person but he refused because he just resigned from job to apply a new job overseas and now he's abroad and we don't have any communication so it also made me more stressed and depressed. When I first saw the embryo during my trans vaginal ultrasound, I almost cried because I really appreciated how it looked like and he/she was just precious and so special. When the doctor said there's no heartbeat detected, I cried because I really regret what I did but I'm still hoping that on my next ultrasound tomorrow there'll be a normal heartbeat and I wouldn't be advised to have D&C by my OB/GYN.

Good luck with the next ultrasound, as jennavee says hopefully it was too early to see the heartbeat on the scan.

We all make mistakes, sometimes huge ones and have to live with them. No-one is perfect :)

bonitta - you are very brave for facing the situation! Don't let the things "luckymommyto5" (her comments are shameful) says get you down. You need support right now, not judgement. Your responses have been very mature.

It is very common to not hear a heartbeat before 6 weeks, so there is still a chance that things could turn out ok. From what I can find, cytotec has an 80% success rate in abortions, so it could have failed.

My prayers are with you! Stay strong!
