Q: How much time should be taken off before and after baby is born?

I was just wondering how long each of you took off work? Assuming you were not put on bed rest or anything like that (and if you were please mention that!) I have a part time job and my fiance has a full time job working at least 10 hours a day 5 days a week. I plan on taking at least 6 weeks off after baby is born, but don't know if people recommend staying away longer or not. Also I don't know how much time to plan to take off before baby comes, nor do I know the normal time frame people would take off before baby arrives. My fiance may have between 2-4 weeks paid paternity leave (although his company is looking to get rid of it before I'm due ): .) Also I'm not sure who will watch baby when i go back to work yet. We are not comfortable taking baby to day care that early, and can't afford anything too expensive. Please share you're stories, or what you plan on doing!

How much time before the baby ones is really up to you nd how you're feeling. I worked (schlepping through snow &nyc subways) until the day before my due date, and baby came 36 hours later. If ou feel up o it, you're better off saving vacation (or missed wages) or after. I took off 12 weeks (FMLA), and it was totally worth it.

I think 6 weeks is probably average, if you gave a vaginal delivery. Most daycares won't take babies younger than 6 weeks anyway. I was out 10, but I had a C-section. I planned to work up until my delivery date, but ended up out 2 weeks before, on bedrest. This time I am planning to be out a week and a half before just because it gets a little cumbersome in the end with how big you can be....I just rather be home doing stuff than dragging into work LOL
