Q: New job...when should I tell them?

Hi! I am 4w3d and I recently got a promotion at my company. I found out after I was offered the job that I'm expecting, but I have NO clue when/how to tell my new boss. I typically have horrid morning sickness and thankfully so far I have not with this pg. But I don't know how long I'm going to be able to hide it. I expect to show early (I recently lost 25 lbs) and I already have drs appts set up. I know wait until I'm comfortable, but do you think earlier is better? I want to make sure everything is ok first too.
Thanks!

Thank you all for your responses! I'm not so much worried about what they will do/say, just that it's going to be a HUGE disappointment for them that I'm taking 3 months off after only being in the group for 8 months. Plus, my new boss is a man, which makes things a little more awkward in my opinion!

I visited the doc yesterday to get an RH- shot and have them take baseline thyroid bloods, and I go back in 3 weeks (at which point I'll be almost 8 weeks) for my ultrasound. This is my 3rd, so if I can hide it that long, I definitely will! I have an office, so if I have to suffer morning sickness in there, so be it!

Well, I had better get busy - at work! :-)

Best wishes to you all, whether you are TTC or already pg or new mommies!

i'd tell them, once you have told they can do a risk assement, and then tell you what things you can and can't do.
i told my boss a few days after i found out. i only work on tills but some days i have to heavey lifting depending on what the customer brings to the till, can't do that now.

they can't fire you because you pregnant, they can only reccommend things to do.

I might mention it to him/her- they can't fire/demote you, etc., for being pregnant it's against the laws!

You should feel comfortable telling them at any time. Depending on what your job is, certain restrictures or precautions may need to be made to accomadate your pregnancy. Also, no matter when you tell them, they can't fire you or discipline you for being pregnant; there are laws against that.

Depending on the job, you can usually wait until the safe point (12 weeks) to tell your boss. The only exception might be if your morning sickness is the sudden onset type (you don't know it is coming so you can run to the restroom) or if you need to be on your feet a lot and may get faint or something. You can usually hide the weight gain with baggier tops for several weeks so I wouldn't worry about that, and the dr appointments shouldn't raise any eyebrows unless you end up needing to go back multiple times for something, since they are only ever 4-6 weeks at first. Some places you don't have to say you have a doctor's appointment, you can just tell them you need a half day. It really all depends on your new boss and your work environment. Good luck!
