Q: Is it Discrimination?

I dont know what to do, im in a bit of a pickle here.

Ive decided to carry on at college, my course doesn't finish until July and im due in May. At the moment im around 7 and a half/8 weeks pregnant. Most of my classmates know im expecting and their a lovely bunch.

My tutors on the other hand has strictly said we're not allowed to get pregnant whilst on the course. I haven't yet announced my pregnancy to her but im going to do so after my first scan once i know every things alright with the baby.

Im terrified of telling her that im pregnant and being kicked off the course and not allowed back?. If i choose to stay and they say no is this classed as discrimination?. My fiance seems to think that it is classed as that and i can sue them for a lot of money :S

What does everyone else think about this?

While not being allowed to continue class due to pregnancy would be discrimination in a book learning class setting, in a beauty class many chemicals are used and I believe it's more of a safety issue then discrimination. The school is probably not allowed to train those who are expecting with the necessary chemicals due to birth defects that may be caused and lawsuits that may be applied to the school due to said defects.
I would look further into it and see if there are laws against them training those expecting , see how continuing may affect your baby, and see if you can pickup where you leave off the next semester if you need to temporarily be out of the class.

Yes that does sound like discrimination, but you said you were doing a beauty course, correct? That sounds like it would have alot of chemicals involved and thus could cause birth defects to your unborn child. I would talk to your doctor and explain the whole situations.

The only thing they may have grounds for is if some of the chemicals they use while teaching your class could be harmful to the fetus. If they don't want the liability or their insurance says they will not cover your child, they may have a right to delay your schooling. But, if that happens, they should allow you to return once you have given birth. sorry for your pickle!

Yah, that seems like an odd school... seems like that would be discrimination to me, unless you signed something agreeing to not get pregnant or something like that. congrats!

What type of course are you taking where they think they can tell you when you can become a mother? That just sounds crazy to me! I'm also in school and I will deliver before the end of term so I am going to make arrangements to get all my assignments in early...can you do the same thing with your course?
