Q: Hyperemesis, need advice please :)

Hi Ladies, Im currently 18 weeks pregnant and since 6 weeks pregnant I have been suffering with severe hyperemesis. So much so that I have been hospatilised and put on a drip. That was at 8 weeks pregnant and although I am not being sick as much I am still throwing up everyday. I got signed off from work at 8 weeks pregnant for 2 weeks and at the moment I have been signed off again for 2 weeks (due to go back next tuesday) My question is that my work arent very supportive. When I went back after my first 2 weeks off, I have never been treat with the respect I was treat with before I was signed off. The managers havent done anything to make my job any easier and I am worried about going back. I struggle at work and have to go to the toilet to be sick numerous amounts of times a day. Im totally fed up! Can I be sacked? Also I have to see my doctor again on Monday, do you think I could get another sick line? I only have 11 weeks until my maternity leave starts. Thanks x

I'm sorry you have this- no your employers absolutely cannot fire you, there is law and Hr etc. Stuff feeling sorry for them especially if they are not doing anything to help you or make your job easier. Are you in the UK? I am off sick from sciatica and had lots of time off for sickness and start my maternity next week so if it doesn't get any better I would suggest staying off, obviously dependent on financial circumstances and whether you get sick pay. When you are that sick and struggling I think you just end up totally miserable and you need to take work out of the equation if you can and just concentrate on feeling half decent, your only pregnant once to a few times in life so just take the time you need and try not to worry about work. They will get their moneys worth out of you when you go back and before you were pregnant. Sorry for rambling, do I make sense? :)

I usually feel bad for the employers in these kinds of situations. I feel really bad for them. I don't know what you can do, but maybe just keep going in and doing the very little you can for them in between sick leaves, and make it 11 more weeks until you can claim maternity leave against them. Unfortunately, I think you are set with the law on your side that they have to keep you employed with them, so don't worry about getting fired. Just... hang in there and you will make it to your maternity leave.
