Q: Plus size and pregnant and wanting to exercise....

I'm almost 5 weeks pregnant and this is my first so needless to say we're ecstatic! I'm starting my pregnancy at about 200lbs which is the most I've weighed in my life. I've had a tendency to exercise sporadically but I want to be healthy for my baby. Aside from stopping to take my heart rate or making sure I can hold a conversation while working out are there any other precautions I should take? Right now I'm doing Pilates. I really don't want to mess up or make any mistakes with my first pregnancy.

I would exercise every once in a while before becoming pregnant but not consistently at all (maybe once a week).

Hey i was roughly the same when i fell pregnant, that was after losing weight also, so it was frustrating that i was going to put on what i had lost, but i was still ecstatic about my wee bundle! Did you do much exercise before pregnancy? If so, you should be ok to carry on at the same level but don't go over board, and also seek your doctors advice. Pilates and yoga will be brilliant for you, especially towards third trimester when your ligaments can go haywire lol. For me, i found walking was a great help especially since it was a mile from the carpark to work, but once i hit 7mths i couldn't keep this up.

Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy it and don't exert yourself too much, its good to be active during pregnancy, but better to ensure your safety and that of your baby x
