Q: Is it really dangerous to eat eggs from my neighbor's chickens?

My neighbors raise chickens and we usually get our eggs from them. It just occurred to me that they aren't pasteurized. Is it really unsafe to eat these eggs?

I am 33wks pregnant. I started raising my own chickens before I got pregnant. We only eat fresh eggs. No store eggs in this house! The eggs are safe. Wash before cracking open and cook like you would a store bought egg. Of course no raw egg. That's a rule for all eggs.

Just wash the shell before cracking open. You have fresh healthy eggs, can't beat that for you or baby. The store bought ones are NOT fresh the chickens and usually are not able to be out in the open. the eggs you are getting are a gift! They usually contain more vitamins that store eggs too.

Whole eggs are not pasturized (only the egg whites in milk box would possibly be pasturized). You cook them before eating so no point in pasturizing them...though, pretty sure if they did try to pasturize a raw whole egg then the egg would essentially be hard boiled when you bought it since pasturizing is using heat to kill bacteria!!

Juast cook them well and wash your hands after handling the shells!!

There is nothing wrong with eating eggs from your neighbour's chickens. Be sure to cook them well. Salmonella generally contaminates eggs from the outside of the shell when you crack them. Just before use, you may want to rinse the eggs if there is a lot of dirt on them as there sometimes is with free-range eggs. Don't rinse them early, though: rinsing early deteriorates the shell and makes them spoil faster. :)

The same thing goed for your neighbours eggs as for store-bought eggs, don't eat them raw. They may contain a bacterium called salmonella, which can be harmful for both you and the baby. Other than that there is no danger in eating them.
I don't know about eggs where you live, but store-bought eggs here in the Netherlands are never pasteurized, you can't even get those boxes with pasteurized egg-white or anything...
