Here in Denmark doctors say not to color hair at all. Things like shampoo, deodorant and bodywash should be swan labeled, which means that they do not have parfume, parabens and colorants. I stopped coloring my hair 1 year before I have planned my pregnancy to avoid coloring during the pregnancy.

I do it every couple of months, have done it twice during this pregnancy. No issues whatsoever.

You can use a Demi permanent color instead of permanent (lasts a few months, long enough to need a touch up anyway, but does not have all the chemicals) along with foil highlights so that the product does not touch your scalp. This is what my midwife and stylist recommend and have been doing for me. There is not a lot of research on this matter, but to be safe don't do it yourself (at home products are harsher and you are not ventilated enough).

I colored my hair, my doctor said it is safe as long as you're in a well-ventilated area.

I always went to an Aveda salon while pregnant, figuring that if I was going to do it, the least amount of chemicals was the best route.

I had mine highlighted at 6 months. My Doctor said that it was fine, just to make sure that you are not in a closed in space because the fumes can make you sick. I am not sure if you plan on going to a salon or not. If so, you may want to call ahead and see what kind of policy they have. My old hairdresser would not dye my hair at all the entire time that I was pregnant.

a well ventilated area is key. The amount that can get into your bloodstream through your scalp (if you're doing it properly and not reeeeally rubbing onto your skin...) is incredibly low. It doesn't even say on the boxes not to use while pregnant, that's how low it is. I've asked my doctor about this one and he said the only worry he has is women who do it in a closed up bathroom. Keep the fumes circulating away from you and you'll be fine (and even that he said was more about us mothers, than the baby) Also, when I dyed my hair i took a epsom salt & bubble bath afterward to get rid of the horrible dye smell :) Just a note! Hormones are obviously going crazy while we're pregnant, so go with a color you know and love, and not something you've never had before, because results can vary when pregnant. Personally, mine always came out looking great, but a little lighter shades than when I wasn't pregnant, using the same stuff.

I had mine highlighted with foils earlier on on in pregnancy, because the bleach/ cours doesn't touch the scalp it does'nt absorb it into the blood steam, thus passing through the placenta. I'm 35 weeks now and plan on colouring my hair again before I fi e birth. One thing I will say is make sure it is done in a well ventilated area! Hairdressers is fine.
