Q: Sex During Pregnancy

So, I read that it's okay to have sex during pregnancy, but I'm still not completely sure if it's ALWAYS okay. I'm in my first trimester right now and don't wanna mess things up. What did your OBGYNs tell you about this subject? :D

Sex throughout pregnancy is fine. My hubby and I have sex and if I spot after, I usually wait a few days til the spotting disappears then have fun again. Spotting doesn't always happen after sex, just every once in a while. I hear doctors will advise you if you have sex and you spot after, just wait a few days til it goes away. I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant and the baby is doing great!

Unless you're dr says otherwise it is completely fine. With my first I was scared to hell and back. So I told my husband not till we hit the second trimester. It was about 18 weeks when I finally gave in. Number two was ok from the start then was put on pelvic rest for 4 weeks due to cramping. So it was second trimester before we could really do anything. I was put on pelvic rest for two weeks with this one (6 weeks) for bleeding and cramping. Ill be 12 weeks tomorrow and everything is fine. So really its when you feel comfortable.

It is totally okay. And yes, you may spot a little afterwards but that is normal too. Your Doctor will tell you if it is not okay. I had placenta previa and was on pelvic rest for 8 weeks, but it moved up and I am in the clear now. As long as you do not have any complications like that, you should be in the clear. Have fun!

Word of caution: the cervix fills with blood and is really sensitive in pregnancy so you could spot after sex. Very very common (even non-sex activities like laughing, sneezing, exercise and other things can cause this), but any sight of blood is crazy scary. Also, sometimes during pregnancy, the uterus gets really hard after orgasm and can take a few hours to soften up again - it can even look all weird and sort of off center if you're at the point where you're showing. Again, totally normal. Just so you're prepared. :)

Of course, any bleeding that fills a pad in an hour or is accompanied by cramping, call your doctor.

I waited until about 8 weeks after we'd seen the heartbeat (twice at that point) and I felt it was really implanted. This was more for my mental peace of mind, though, and because I had OHSS and we couldn't for a few weeks anyway. My doctor said our pregnancy was healthy and we should as often as we can :). It's actually good for you and baby to have orgasms. If you experience any complications, though, it's important to ask again because it may no longer be safe.

Thanks, girls! I don't know about my pregnancy yet, I haven't been to the doctor yet. My first visit in this week! I think all is fine and I'm healthy, so fingers crossed! Thanks for your replies!

totally agree with essemkay. If you aren't high risk, or don't know of any complications, go have fun :) My doctor said that unless you already have issues going on internally, sex isn't going to mess anything up. We're made to be able to do that ;)

As long as you're not on pelvic rest (usually occurs for things like an SCH or placenta previa or imcomplete cervix) sex should be fine at every stage of pregnancy -- although it might get a bit tricky near the end. If you're a high risk pregnancy, I'd check with your doctor first.
