Q: Does any body have any tricks for heart burn?

I've been having intense heartburn and I am not one to take any medication while pregnant. Water and milk only work for so long....any tricks?

Tums is an excellent choice for mild/moderate heartburn, however, if your heartburn is severe and you find yourself popping them all day, then you need to talk to your OB about something stronger. You CAN overdose on Tums as too much calcium can become a very bad thing (that's why it says on the back not to take more than 10 in 24 hrs). I went through this with my first pregnancy and it looks like I'm heading down the same road with #2. Once I needed more Tums than what is deemed safe, my OB put me on an OTC medication, but even that didn't help, so I was put on a prescription. My heartburn was so bad with my daughter, it turned into reflux and I actually started to lose my voice! I understand your hesitancy to avoid medications, but as the other women posted, there are several safe options available, so there is no need to suffer! :)

I asked my doctor the same question and he said the liquids like Mylanta and Maalox are better than Tums because Tums don't coat the lining of the stomach and end up having to take more a few hours later. My husband asked his gastroenterologist and he agree with my doctor. I had such horrible heartburn with my daughter that I took Zantac (OTC) and am heading that way with this one. My doctor said anything over the counter is safe during pregnancy as long as you follow the instructions on the package. jkim 80 and KenpoMommy both had great tips and answers too. :)

I agree with the others, heartburn and indigestion are a common pregnancy annoyance that shouldn't be ignored, especially heartburn since left totally untreated back heartburn or acid reflux can cause damage as someone mentioned. So as your doc what they recommend and take it, other tips are small meals more frequently, don't lay down after eating and try sleeping in a semi reclined position especially if you find your heartburn to be worse at night (which many of us do) the heartburn during pregnancy is caused by relaxin hormone loosening the valve/muscle at the entrance to the stomach allowing acid to reflux up into the esophagus which happen more easily when gravity helps that acid slide up when we lay down, we eat to much at once or the baby helps squish the stomach up trying to make space :) make note of foods that seem to aggravate your heartburn and avoid if possible often really acidic or spicy foods. Oddly lemon water helps, apple cider vinegar and honey. good luck

There are several good, perfectly safe prescription meds you can take for heartburn during pregnancy. Mine got so bad with my last baby, I had to be one two different ones at once. I couldn't eat anything without them! This pregnancy, I'm only taking one so far. Its made a huge difference! I can actually eat again. Don't be afraid of prescription meds during pregnancy. There are a lot you can't take for obvious reasons, but there are many safe ones for all kinds of problems. Don't suffer if you don't need to. Untreated heartburn and reflux can cause damage to your stomach valve and esophagus and that is harder to treat and more painful. See your dr and ask him/her about heartburn meds.
