Q: Why do some women have ultrasounds done so early?

I've seen quite a few pics on this site with ultrasound images from 5, 4 or even 3 weeks! I didn't even know that was possible to see anything that early. Are there special circumstances that docs would do that so early, or is it because you insist on getting one done to confirm the pregnancy? I'm just curious because I've lost two pregnancies and am wondering when I'll get my first ultrasound. I don't think I'll be able to be the least bit excited until I can see and/or hear something. Please share your stories!

Thanks for sharing, everyone. I have my first appointment next week. We'll see what happens. I am hoping the Dr will insist on an ultrasound.

I had an U/S at 8 weeks because I miscarried this year and was in a panic. My doctor ordered it to give me a piece of mind because she is sure this one is a healthy one. She was right, so far so good :) It helped me calm down and relax. I got to see the heart thumping and brought home the pictures of the scan to show my DH. :) Yay. Now I can't wait for the next one to find out what it is!

If you can, wait until 6-7 weeks. They can't see the heartbeat or sometimes much at all before that which can just cause you more stress. My fertility clinic would measure our levels but they wouldn't do a scan until you were 6+. They figured that if you were going to miscarry the scan wouldn't help; the only exception being if they suspected ectopic. Typically if your blood was doing something wonky or your progesterone was low they would either keep monitoring it or try to bump it up but once you are already pregnant it's mostly a waiting game to see if it will stick! Good luck! I hope you get to see your little bean soon :)

I had my first at 5w5d because my hcg levels were low & I've been going through fertility treatment. After 2 miscarriages, I would ask for an early ultrasound. I am surprised they haven't ordered one

Mine was 6 weeks because of fertility treatments. They want to see how many and if they are ectopic and determine viability before turning you over to a regular ob or midwife.

In my case, I had a lot of red bleeding early on....so I was scanned early and often to check on the pregnancy. Sometimes women who are going through IVF get scanned early too....many before 8 weeks....because the doctors are looking to confirm the pregnancy along with quantity of babies present.

Iv been scanned 5 times and I'm only 11+1 because at first they thought I was ectopic and then I had a
Haematoma thing ( I don't know much about it I haven't searched it and told the midwife I don't want to know because I just don't want to know because I will just worry more) I kept bleeding & getting lots n lots of pains I also had 2 miscarriages before this pregnancy x

In the UK we don't get our first scan until 12 weeks. but I had one done at 7 weeks because I had been through a long journey of fertility treatment and had a history of miscarriage, so they just wanted to check that the pregnancy was viable :)

I had an emergency scan done at 5wks 3days due to ending up in emergency rooms with severe stomach pains they suspected it was ectopic! the scan preformed was internal and not very nice! Then I was scanned every two weeks until week 12 to make sure everything was progressing as it should be!!!! So my reason was not due to a lot of worry over nothing, I was in extreme pain and fainting, I had a previous miscarriage at 10weeks 8 years ago and this pain with this pregnancy was completely different therefore a midwife in the office next to mine (I work in hospital) advised me to go!!!!

I had an early one, but I had IVF and they like to determine how many babies are in there etc. However mine was done at a stage (6w4d) where you can see the heartbeat and whatnot. It gave me a piece of mind and reassurance and would have another one IF (big if lol) I was to have another baby. However this is baby no4 and the first time I had an early scan, the others I was 20 weeks before I had any scan at all :)
