Q: Any other pregnant staff nurses out there? Just wondering when you plan on starting your maternity?

I work a 12.5 hour day on a busy medical ward. Sometimes on my feet for 11.5 hours of the day. I'm struggling now with the long shifts at 18 weeks, just wondering when others doing a similar job are planning on starting their mat leave? I'm currently planning to go on annual leave at 34 weeks and start mat at 36.....

I am definitely counting down the shifts! Its definitely not the ideal job to do whilst you are pregnant. It's hard isn't it deciding what's best in terms of taking some time off before baby is born so you look after both yourself and the baby or having more time with the baby once it's born......

I am currently 32 weeks and have been debating the same thing. Being on my feet all day and running around like a crazy person is truly starting to hurt me. My only problem is I'm being guilted into staying until I deliver but I honestly don't think I can hang on that long. I'm a swollen mess and on busy busy days I contract plus finding time to eat can be a struggle.

I'm 32 weeks and work in a similar unit that you do. VERY busy, always on the go. I had to go on leave at 26 weeks for preterm labor. Other nurses in my unit have literally gone to 40 weeks, others have gone earlier. I think it depends on how you're feeling and when you want to start leave. If I would have had the choice, I probably would have started leave at 38 weeks (i only get 12), that way I could have prepared for her and not felt rushed at all. Thinking of you.. I know it's rough!!!

I'm a vet nurse and do 12hr shifts as well. Very rare to get a break and it's super intense work. I'm finishing at 32 weeks and taking annual leave (at reduced hours) until bub is born then my mat leave kicks in once he is born :)
