Q: Has anyone ever had gestational diabetes with their first pregnancy and not had it with the second?

I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy and now I am pregnant with our second. I will be taking my glucose tolerance test in about 3 weeks and I'm wondering if there is any hope that I won't have it this time. I know several women who didn't have it with the first pregnancy but had it in later pregnancies. I have yet to find someone who had it with the first and not with subsequent pregnancies.

Hi! I had gestational diabetes with my first daughter, she was born nice and healthy at 39 weeks. That was 17 years ago. I have had 4 more children since then and never had gestational diabetes again! It is possible. I'm currently due with my 6th child on march 30th and I have no worries about getting the gest. diabetes this time either. Hang in there! Best wishes!

Hello, I have a sister who was told she had it with her first and not with her second. I will add though that with diet control during the first pregnancy her baby was born very small, weighing 5lb6oz at 38 wks. Her second baby was born at 32wks and was in the NICU. He weighed 4lb10oz and she was not managing with diet as they told her no to having the gest diabetes. She felt as though she had it with the second rather than the first, but only based on symptoms and presentation of babies.
Good luck on you GTT, fingers crossed that you don't!!
