Q: Co-worker strongly suggests maternity clothes...very frustrating.

A co-worker and friend today said that she wants me to buy and wear maternity clothes so I look "cute". Which initially implies she does not thing I fit her definition of "cute" currently. I have been maintaining the clothes I work pre-pregnancy, and just adding in a few maternity pants and longer tank tops to wear under my open sweaters/tops. I am only 20 weeks pregnant and in no way feel that I need to change my wardrobe drastically and go full on Princess Di in a mumu. I feel comfortable in what I've been wearing (nothing is hanging out anywhere, mind you) and see no reason to buy all new clothes just to draw attention to the fact that I am pregnant. She also thinks that I've been hiding my pregnancy since I haven't been wearing maternity clothes and running through the building screaming that I'm pregnant. This is my thing to be excited about, I don't need to feed off of others' excitement. Advice on how to deal?

I find I'm a bit more sensitive to people's comments when I'm pregnant. Hearing this (as an outsider), my initial thought was that this person thinks pregnancy is "cute" and likes the idea of maternity clothing which accentuates the pregnant body. I don't think she meant an ill will and I'm sure she has no idea the comment would even bother you. My first pregnancy my boss told me "pregnancy is taking it's toll on you, you look like an old hag". He meant it too! This is a family run business and he is the Grandfather so I chalked his rudeness up to his age. I cried when I got home, I was so upset. Some people don't realize how their words can affect the person they are speaking to, especially during pregnancy!!! Try to cut her some slack and just keep doing what you're doing.

I'd tell her to shut it lol. But... I'm not a people person and my friends are very aware of that lol. It's your business what you want to wear and comfort is top priority in my opinion. I only got a few maternity shirts my last pregnancy and I probably won't get very many this pregnancy either. The only reason I had any last time is my mom bought them for me lol... I didn't like the way they fit. I only gained weight in my belly, my boobs didn't get any bigger (and I'm a 34B lol) so all the maternity tops fit weird because they're made for women who have a larger chest =/
