10 Weeks Pregnant

Your Pregnancy Week by Week

*Counting from the first day of your last menstrual period

Your Baby at 10 Weeks

Your baby is the size of a kumquat at 10 weeks pregnant - Pregnancy Week By Week Size: 1.22 inches (3.1 cm)
Weight: 0.14 ounce (4 grams)

This is a major milestone week for you and your baby! Week 10 marks the end of the embryonic period and begins the fetal period. Your baby's organs have all started developing and now have to grow and mature. Because the danger period for organ development is nearing completion, many parents decide that this is the time to start telling close friends and relatives that a new arrival is in the works!

Your baby can now swim through amniotic fluid and will begin to take practice breaths. A practice breath at this point in development involves the baby taking in amniotic fluid. Since your baby is surrounded by this fluid and will continue calling it "Home" for the next few months, breathing in this fluid will help your baby to learn to breath once he is born.

This week your baby is about the size of a kumquat, a tiny citrus fruit.

Mom at 10 Weeks Pregnant

Mom at 10 weeks pregnant - Pregnancy Week By Week Breathe a sigh of relief! You are nearing the end of the morning sickness months! Many mothers-to-be will start to feel a little better at this point, but others may continue feeling ill for a few more weeks. If you find that your queasiness is causing you to miss work or is negatively impacting your life, discuss this with your doctor.

What's that? Is it a baby bump? If this is your second pregnancy (or third or more!), you may start to see that your belly is starting to show. This may seem early, but for those mothers that have already experienced pregnancy, your abdominal muscles are not as strong as they once were. This could cause you to reach for the maternity clothing a lot earlier this time.

If this is your first pregnancy, you may still be in your pre-pregnancy clothes for a bit longer. Rest assured that you will start to develop your baby bump very soon! Some first time pregnant mothers will show early, while others may be in their seventh or eighth month before showing.

Common Symptoms:
If you were experiencing increased and frequent urination during your first trimester, you may start to see that you are able to go for longer periods without running to the rest room. Your baby is starting to get bigger and your uterus is compensating for this fact. As your baby grows in the second trimester, your uterus will start to expand in an upward direction, releasing the pressure that was being placed on your bladder. Enjoy this time of relief because frequent urination will be back to visit during your third trimester.

Other common symptoms you may experience this week:
  • Bloating
  • Increased Breast Size
  • Mood Swings
  • Weepiness
Weight Gain:
As you move into your second trimester (a few more weeks to go!), your weight will start to increase more quickly. Continue making healthy food choices and concentrate on fresh fruits and vegetables. Some women also begin to get cravings, but remember that what you eat, your baby is eating, too. If you are craving ice cream, don't eat an entire pint in one sitting. Settle for a few spoon fulls and then switch to a healthier option such as skim milk or yogurt.

Tips/Advice:
Catch some extra shuteye. Fatigue is out in full force by now and sleep may be all you crave. Try to squeeze in a rest as you can and don't feel bad about it. The early days of pregnancy mean a lot of changes for your body and hormones bring on some major sleepiness. When possible, give in and rest.

10 weeks and 2 days today.. So far I love being pregnant! Knowing that I'm responsible for the little life inside of me makes me feel accomplished. First prenatal is tomorrow and I'm scared and excited all at the same time if that makes any sense. My fiancee and my mother are going with me to help keep me calm and relaxed. Love my little one to death!
