Your Baby at 5 Weeks

Weight: less than 1 gram
At about the size of a sesame seed, your tiny baby doesn't look much like a baby yet, but is developing at a very rapid pace! Your little one is made up three layers - the ectoderm, the mesoderm, and the endoderm.
The neural tube, which will develop into your baby's brain, spinal cord, nerves, and backbone, is developing in the top layer, called the ectoderm. This layer will also become skin, hair, nails, glands, and tooth enamel.
The central nervous system, muscles, bones and even the heart will begin to form around this time. Early skeletal development may also begin at or around pregnancy week 5.
The heart and circulatory system begin to form in the middle layer (mesoderm). During this week, the heart will begin to divide into separate chambers and start pumping blood. The circulatory system is the first organ system to function! This layer will also become muscle, cartilage, bone, reproductive organs, kidneys and other tissues.
The third layer (endoderm) will develop the lungs, intestines, urinary system, thyroid, liver and pancreas.
Mom at 5 Weeks Pregnant

Some women definitely feel pregnant by week 5, others may take longer to notice the uncomfortable first trimester pregnancy symptoms. You may begin to feel nauseous around week 5 or 6, perhaps you've even experienced a few bouts of vomiting. Other early signs of pregnancy you may notice are a need to urinate more often, swollen or sore breasts, bloating and increased fatigue.
Pregnancy symptoms vary in intensity from woman to woman and remember they also vary from pregnancy to pregnancy in the same woman. So how you felt the last time may not be what you feel this time around. Every pregnancy is a unique experience.
Relax, rest when you need it, drink plenty of water and enjoy your pregnancy!
Weight Gain:
You likely haven't gained much by this point in your pregnancy, especially if you are suffering with morning sickness. Your total weight gain, if any, is likely about a pound. By the end of the first trimester, you will have gained about 5 to 7 pounds.
Tips/Advice:
Get first-morning urine. Finally, the week has come when Great Aunt Flow should be arriving for her monthly visit. If she hasn't yet, and you just can't stand the anticipation there are some early- result pregnancy tests you can try that will detect pregnancy hormones as soon as the first day of your missed period. Just remember to use your first urine of the morning for testing. If you must, pee into a disposable cup and dip the stick into it for proper testing. First morning urine is more concentrated and tests are better able to detect even small amounts of hormones more effectively.
