Q: My baby has been detected for high risk of trisomy 13 and 18

Me and my husband went in for the nt scan at 12 weeks, a week later we were told our baby has low risk for trisomy 21(downs syndrome) but high risk for trisomy 13(pataus syndrome) and trisomy 18(Edwards syndrome) my baby has a 1:18 chance of having these, my baby also has omphalocele which is a hernia, we are going to see the specialist tomorrow but I feel lost I don't know if I could keep this baby or terminate and move on with my life, it's taken us 3 years to conceive and it's our first so I'm torn. Is there anyone out there that have had this test, had a positive result but had a healthy child? Or any success stories? Please share

is it too late for CVS so you don't have to wait until 16 weeks for Amnio?

I work in a neonatal ICU so I see these syndromes. I would first confirm with amnio or CVS that the baby for sure has one of the syndromes. Then if they confirm either trisomy 18 or trisomy 13 I would consider termination. I have personally never seen a baby with either syndrome live past a year but I have only been working in the neonatal icu for 3 1\2 years. If the baby just has an omphalocele it can have surgery shortly after birth to correct it and it does require extensive recovery period but the baby would be ok after that. So if it is just an omphalocele I would go through with the pregnancy! Ultimately it is whatever you and your husband are comfortable with though. Just get the research and before making your decision!

A 1:18 chance is actually roughly 5.6%, not a little more than 20% as Mrsfroomie said. Not trying to be rude to any other user, just thought you should have the correct percentage.

If it were me, I would see what kind of testing is available that would give you a better idea of your baby's health and then I'd do some serious research into the syndromes your baby could have. If further testing offers confirms high risks of those disorders, I would probably consider terminating but I don't think I could go through with it because of my religious beliefs. To me, certain syndromes like those severely affect the baby's quality of life but at the same time, your baby could still be healthy and even babies with those disorders can be blessings to their families. I think you and your DH really need to figure out how you both feel and what you're prepared to go through together. So sorry you're having to go through this. <3

Hi there, Im really sorry to hear what you and your husband are going through, especially after trying to concieve for so long. I can't really help much because I declined these tests, however I just wanted to say that im sure your baby will be perfect no matter what. 3 years is a long time to be trying for a baby to terminate. However, obviously this is completely your's and hubby's decision. I wish you good luck in whatever you choose, take care. xXx

Im asking is it selfish to keep my baby cuz i believe that letting her go naturally even if she only lives for a day or 2 is more peaceful?

I feel better after the scan cuz she looked good to me, she was jumping around so much, how can such an active baby have so much wrong?, her heart beat was perfect, the hernia may be just a hernia, but it could also be a symptom of either trisomy, that's y I need the amino,

Thank you everyone so much, it's helps to have real people's thoughts, I've defiantly done my research, either is not a nice syndrome but I think cuz it's my first baby I'd rather either wait to see if she can hang around till I meet her or go naturally. I go to see the specialist today so wish me luck,
blessed be everyone
