Q: Marijuana & Pregnancy

I went for my first prenatal appointment, and for whatever reason they did a drug panel with my blood work. I smoked marijuana one time about 6 weeks ago (the day before I found out i was pregnant) I am now 9 weeks and 1 day pregnant. I tested positive for marijuana...I know my baby will be ok because it was only one time, my question is will they test me every single time I go to an OB appt? I mean it's fine if they do, I just don't like being treated like a "Drug addict" they even put in my notes that I'm a "Cannabis addict" I am so furious

Oh, I know debs. You're the UK. I had just read some posters say that they couldn't/didn't do drug testing here in the US w/o consent. I was just saying that it all depends on what state you live in: different state, different laws.

Well, out of curiosity, I looked online & found out that in some states (not sure how many), there is a law that states drs can screen a woman for substances that may cause harm to the fetus. This, of course, includes drugs. I figured that it was a state law of some type. Drs wouldn't be screening woman after woman without her knowledge unless they could legally do so. Now, whether it is "right" or not, well that's a whole different story.

I definitely never drug tested anyone without consent, I wasn't allowed to test for anything without consent unless court ordered

No, they can drug test at your first prenatal appointment without consent. I didn't know I had been until I saw the paperwork after the fact. Not sure what the legal loophole is that they use to do it without your consent, but they do.

I think it's illegal for you to be tested without informing you, well it defo is in the uk, I worked in a medical lab for years and drug testing was part of my job and I had to make sure I had a signature on a consent form before proceeding, after all that time you should have tested neg, hope you get your situation sorted x

In many clinics women are tested when they start going to that clinic. They do tell you before hand, and I'm sure they have papers that you consented to the tests. Some clinics have these guild lines even before seeing new patients.

I've never heard of drug testing being a part of routine prenatal testing anywhere in the United States. Even if they suspect you, they can't do it without informing you. I drug tested people every day, for years at my last job, and I know this for a fact. There are legal protocols they have to follow during the testing procedure in order for the results to be considered legally valid, that would make it impossible for them to test you without your knowledge. Second hand smoke will not make you test positive and even the most habitual smoker will have a clear test in 30 days. If they really did test you without informing you, then you need to look into that for the sake of your legal rights, but if there is more to this story that we aren't hearing, I would advise you to start reevaluating your life style for the sake of retaining custody of your baby.

I had a false positive at my first prenatal appt with my first child for Benzoids. It was confirmed by a second lab that it had been a false positive. That false report followed me to delivery where they sent social services in. I would imagine you & the baby will be monitored very close. From my understanding, secondhand smoke doesn't cause positive drug tests & THC is normally out of the system within 30 days. However, if you are inhaling that much secondhand smoke (of any kind), you may want to change your company. Remember, everything you take in goes straight to your child.
