Q: Dying your hair

Is it safe to dye your hair in the 1st trimester? I am 6 weeks now and will be around 9 weeks when I would get it done. Thank you for your help.

our dr told us to wait until week 17 and only use ammonia free hair color as other types can harm a fetus

I waited until 14 weeks just to be sure (well my DH was nervous about me doing it & made sure to ask my doctor who said I should wait until 2nd trimester just to be on the safe side). Luckily by chance, I happened to had colored right before I conceived so it wasn't looking too terrible by the time I got to 14 weeks. The color came out fine and I made sure to keep the vent on in the bathroom the whole time. I'd wait until 2nd trimester just because it's considered a little safer. Good luck:-)

I dyed my hair twice in my first trimester. (Once with my daughter, and once this pregnancy with my son). The only thing my dr said was to either do it close to an open window, or if you have a back yard where not many people can see you if you would be embarrassed, then to do it outside. If you get it done professionally instead of box dyes, their chemicals are a lot more safe and you dont have to worry about the toxic smell. I just use box dye when I am pregnant because my roots came back sooo much faster when I'm pregnant and I couldnt afford to go get my hair dyed every month. lol. A lot of girls also choose to dye their hair to the color closest to their natural hair color so their roots dont show later.

Yes, you can, but your hair changes during pregnancy, so the color may not take the same way it did before you got pregnant.

Part 2- That said, if you're still concerned, consider waiting to color your hair until the second trimester, when your developing baby is less vulnerable. Also, instead of using an all-over hair color, consider a process like streaking, highlighting, painting, or frosting, in which the chemicals have little or no contact with your scalp. (Any hair-coloring agents absorbed into your system would come through your skin, not through your hair shaft

The BabyCenter Editorial Team
The limited evidence that's available suggests that it's probably safe to dye your hair during pregnancy. The Organization of Teratology Information Services (OTIS), which provides information on potential reproductive risks, says that animal studies are reassuring and that there are no reports of hair dye causing changes in human pregnancies, despite the fact that many women have colored their hair during pregnancy. OTIS also points out that very little of the chemicals in hair dye is actually absorbed into your system.
