Q: High Carb Diet to Prep for 3 Hour Test?

So I bombed the 1-hour test so now I have to take the 3-hour test in a few days and I was ordered to eat a high carb diet. I'm freaking out about hurting my baby even more so than I already have if I have GD.

Should I go on a diabetic diet now or should I just keep eating how I usually eat (pretty healthy) just increase the amount of carbs?

Eating high carbs should help keep from getting a false postive on the the test. I forget why, but I read somewhere that you need to eat carbs for a few days before the test. I think if you're body is used to low carb it can cause your bloodsugar to spike when you do eat something with lot of of carbs/sugar.

Maybe it's like getting your body used to that kind of sugar load before the big day???

You won't pass the test just because you didn't follow their instructions. No matter how good I am for days in a row, if I do something like eat cake, or drink 100g of glucose, my blood sugar is going to sky rocket. You're either diabetic or you aren't. This is my second time with GD and I declined the 3 hour test this time because I find it to be cruel and unusual torture.

For what it's worth, my doctor didn't recommend a high carb diet before I took the 3 hour last time and I ate impeccably for days before the test and STILL failed. Despite not being overweight or anything, my genetics have just pre-disposed me to GD (for diabetic grandparents and my father has Type 2 Diabetes).

I agree. Do what they are telling you to do so it won't mess with the results of the test. After the test, you can focus on a diabetic diet. Good luck!

If they have recommended a higher carb diet for the test then you should follow their orders, you don't want to had GD and have the test show negative because you pre diagnosed yourself, failing the 1 hours doesn't necessarily mean that you do have GD. In the end you we are all probably better trying to follow a diabetic diet (within reason) pregnant or not. Having GD at this stage doesn't hurt the baby just tends to make them get fatter and at this stage in the game no harm is done by that, towards the end of your pregnancy that is a different story. Good luck
