Q: Will my first ultrasound, at 7w1d, be trans-vaginal or abdominal?

I am going in for my first ultrasound on May 24th. I will be 7w1d. I am trying to get a handle on what to expect in terms of bills from insurance. I am kind of getting the run-around-- the doctor's billing office tells me to contact insurance, who then tell me to contact my doctor. I managed to get some billing codes for different types of ultrasounds, but no one can tell me exactly what type to expect. So my question is this: is the first ultrasound generally trans-vaginal or abdominal?

They did both on me at 6 weeks and 7 weeks! just depends on if they can see it!

At 6W2D, they did both on me! Because of the positioning of my ovaries, they have trouble seeing them on a transvaginal scan. You could see everything on the abdominal scan, but it is generally clearer on the internal scan, so be prepared to have both done - not fun, but at least it's over quick! Good luck :)

Mine was Transvaginal, only after 12 weeks do we get the abdominal :) xxx Good Luck and Enjoy :D

They were able to do an abdominal one on me at 6w2d. She mentioned at first that if she couldn't see what she needed to see, that they would have to do a transvaginal one, but she was able to find it all without having to do one :) Best of luck!!

My first scan was at 7w 3d and it was transvaginally...good luck!

yea i believe it will be transvaginally. at my 10w5d they did abdominal though!

Usually scans done this early are done transvaginally, if it was being done through the abdomen they instruct you to drink water and have a full bladder. There is a chance they will try none invasive first but this early your uterus is still way down in the pelvis so getting a clear look through the abdomen is a little harder to do. Good luck :)
