Q: Do you have to check for Gestational Diabetes???

From what I know no one has ever had it in my family. I really dont want more bills from the doctors. My doc told me to have it done, but for what reason? Everything looks just fine! Is there any harm to baby if I actually did have it?

You should do the test. Think about your baby. I had it with my first baby and he was 9lb 12oz and I ended up having to have a c-section because he was so big. It doesn't matter if it runs in the family or not, it's something you get when you are pregnant. I got tested earlier with this pregnancy and I have it again. I'm glad they caught it earlier this time so they can monitor it closer. So please get checked.

just check, i would talk to dr about maybe seeing if they can work out a way to decrease cost like a self pay discount etc. but the risk of not getting it done can be detrimental to both u and baby so its best just to do it. I did mine today and its so gross and almost threw up but remembered id have to do it again. most of theses test have already weeded out for unnecessary tests :) good luck mamma

I would get the test done because if you do have it it can be dangerous for you and your baby if its not monitored properly.

I'd certainly have it done- better to be safe than sorry! No one in my family had ever had any complications during labor and & delivery, but I did with my first daughter. Every pregnancy is different. Good luck!!

I had a positive result on my first test and have just had a second test completed (results to come). I have no family history, and don't fit into the 'higher risk' criteria for G. Diabetes. My sister is also pregnant and declined the test, but will now be getting checked too because of my positive result.

Gestational Diabetes can happen during pregnancy, even if you didnt have it before. Its one of those things that can happen during pregnancy and need to be checked.. I know its costly but rather just have it done, happy and healthy pregnancy :)

I would definately get it done. Gestational diabetes doesn't come from family history, its not genetic. Its just chance. And yes, it can harm your baby if you have it. Besides causing the baby to be extremely large in size, the baby can be born a diabetic and dependent on insulin if you don't take care of it if you have it. We have absolutley no diabetes in my family and I got gestational diabetes when pregnant with my daughter. I was able eto control mine through diet and testing my blood sugar 4 times a day. I felt sick if I didn't eat right and my daughter was born 9 lbs 4 oz and almost 2 weeks early so imagine if I didn't test for it! It's a smart decision to get the test done. I don't have it with this pregnancy, so its all chance....good luck!
