Q: Thoughts on turkey sandwiches???

Hi all,
I wanted to get your thoughts/opinions on eating deli meat sandwiches during pregnancy. I know the concerns with Listeria, but I also know there is a slim chance of getting it, pregnant or not. I have had a few sandwiches since finding out I was pregnant (10 weeks today), but really try to limit them if possible. Sometime my cravings are too much to ignore.

Listeriosis can come from the factory where sandwhich meat is processed or the deli where its cut in front of you. Deli meat is packaged at the plant before its sliced and when prepackaged after its sliced. If you MUST have sandwich meat, heat it. Also, all deli meat is cooked, no? I certainly dont go home with raw deli meat in my bag! Do you? Just because everyone you know was fine, doesnt mean you will be so why risk it. Yes it is not very common, but there is still a chance, again is it worth the risk?

My doctor told me the same as jkg9510 and I have also read it in a pregnancy magazine. Many pre-packaged lunchmeat already say "fully cooked" on them if you look. I have eaten quite a few Oscar Myer Bolognea sandwhiches and have even had subway a couple of times and all is fine. I also ate deli meat with both of my other 2 children (was never told not to) and they are just fine. I have a friend who was pregnant last year and ate a bolongea sandwhich for lunch everyday and her baby was just fine! I have also read and been told by my dr. that the thing to watch for is buying deli meat from the deli counter or something. I think that is were this whole "listeria" thing started and most sources are not specific and just say "deli meat" so it makes pregnant gals afraid to eat any of it. I have been told that pre-packed luncheon meats are okay. Hope this helps!

I have fried bologna sandwiches and if I am really craving a regular sandwich I heat up the meat to so everything bad could be killed. I won't eat anything not heated up.

I ate it with my son who is 6. My doctors never told me not to. I also ate it occasionally with my daughter. Both we're fine. One thing I was told with my daughter was just to make sure to heat it.

my doctor told me that boxed and pre-packaged lunch meat is fine, she says it's the meat you buy at the deli counter to be weary of. She also said that Jimmy John's and Subway are fine, because they are held to higher standards than the deli counter.

I know that the likelihood is small that I can get sick, but it only takes one sandwich so for me I have decided not to eat it...its only for a few months right?

I think what helped me to make my decision was the idea that I could miscarry all becasue of a sandwich..for me its not worth it

I eat lunchmeat once a week. My doc said she allows patients to eat it about twice a week!
