Q: Genetics screening? Unsure..

Hello,
I am currently 16 weeks and I have been asked by my doctor if I want the genetics screening done. I said no at the time because my husband and I have decided that we didn't want to be faced with all the stress that the test may bring on my pregnancy if anything came back. I was just wondering if anyone else is having the same concerns or if anyone also opted to not have the tests done? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I was the exact same way! I was going through this fear of being faced with if my child were to have down syndrome or cystic fibrosis that my dr would give me the option to terminate, and even though I would never terminate a pregnancy, I wouldn't want my child living like that either. When I spoke to my dr about this she told me that it's a good thing to do because if the baby were to have something like cystic fibrosis they would need to start treating her as soon as she was born. And down syndrome there's a certain type of DS that can come with a serious heart defect. I did end up having the genetic testing done and everything turned out fine =) Even if your blood was to test as a genetic carrier of something, and even if your husband tested as a carrier of the same thing, there's still only like a 25% chance the baby would have it.

I only had the NT scan done, mostly because they werent going to offer me and ultrasound until 20 weeks and i couldnt wait that long lol!! I think you just need to think if you did get all the test and your baby came back with some disorder would you have an abortion?? If your answer is no then i wouldnt be having any invasive test done.

I had the NT scan/first trimester screening between 12 and 13 weeks but have not been asked to come in for any other screenings, I'm 19w1d now. What screening would happen at 16 weeks?

My husband and I opted out of all the genetic testing because we felt that no matter what we were going to love and care for the baby. Also because we felt that we were fairly low risk and there was no onus to us knowing if there was anything medically concerning. Its a personal choice :)

I am 12 wks, 5 days, and just had our 1st trimester screening. Doctor said everything looked great. We won't be having that screening either.

We didn't have the tests, it didn't matter to us, but like the others said its a personal choice and everyone is differnt.

Its totally a personal choice. I have opted to have all the tests as I would need to know to prepare myself should anything be wrong & so I could deal with it mentally. Plus I couldnt wait the whole pregnancy not knowing. Some people prefer not too, its a personal decision.

It's a completely personal decision. I asked my doctor before she could even think of it because I knew I would need to know if there was something wrong. It all depends on what you know you can handle I guess. If you are ok with the idea of having a genetic disorder occur and not finding out until the baby is born, then don't do the test.
