They go by your LMP because, as you can tell from some of these answers, everyone ovulates at different times during their cycle. Don't worry...your doc knows the difference and when giving your an ultrasound will take all of these factors into consideration. If you get a vaginal ultrasound, you'll see a lot more. Sooo exciting!

They do go by lmp but it all still comes down to when you really ovulated and when the egg was fertilized. Depending on the cycle some women ovulate 1 week earlier and some are later. If you fall on the latter one there's a possibility that even though your lmp puts you at 7weeks but your gestational age could be at 4 weeks. I know it's confusing. My cycle is every 20 to 18 days with a flow length of 4 days and ovulation around day 7 - 10 of my cycle. My 1st EDD given to me by a nurse was 4/22/12, next EDD was given to me by my OB is 4/17/12 and when I had u/s 6wks 5 days my bub was measuring at 8wks 1day and my new EDD was 4/12/12.

My first ultrasound was ta 8 weeks 5 days and because it was a vaginal one I was able to clearly see my babies body, head and bottom were very obvious. If you have a reg. US , be prepared to not see as much details.

My first ultrasound was at 6 weeks and they saw the yolk sac, embryo, and heartbeat. I couldn't really see the embryo, but they did, and we could definitely see the heartbeat flashing...
