Q: Cervix opening?

I know this may be a strange question but it's really been bothering me for a while now. When we started TTC I learned how to check my cervix and around 5 weeks pregnant I was curious to see how it had changed. It was tightly closed at this point. I'm currently 15 weeks and for a while now my cervical opening is about the size of a fingertip. I've read that it should be tightly closed. This is my first pregnancy, so I don't know if this is normal. My doctor hasn't performed a pelvic exam yet either so that further adds to my worry. I want to call and ask, but I hate dealing with the nurses at her office and don't want to call them unless I KNOW something is wrong. Just wondering if anyone else (1)has gone through this and (2)what I should do about it.

I've had. Also, I unfortunately don't have any other options about goign to a different practice. This practice I'm at now is the only one that feeds into this particular hospital. There is another hospital in the area with many doctors and midwives and practices but because of a medical malpractice lawsuit my husband's family went through I can't go there. The next closest hospital is 45 minutes away. Sorry for the rant, I had to get it out!

I went to the office today, to a different doctor because mine wasn't available. He was very very nice, told me I shouldn't feel stupid for be being concerned. Everything is fine and sealed up tight. I love my doctor, it's her nurse and receptionist who are rude and condescending. The doctor's office mailed out surveys and I held nothing back about how a this nurse always makes me feel like I shouldn't call for little things. The only times I've called (a total of 3) were because I was spotting and this time! I'd say bleeding during pregnancy warrants a phonecall. I don't want to raise a stink about it and be labeled as "The New Pregnant Girl Who Cries Wolf" but I dread calling the nurse's station and dealing with the receptionist. I guess I should mention that she has one nurse who I love and always is very informative and has great bedside manner, so they are not ALL bad. If it continues to be an issue I'm going to write a letter, not necessarily mean but truthful about the

Get a different practice on your case!! Your pregnancy should be a wonderful time, and they are supposed to be there to answer all of your crazy questions! Seriously, it seems they are not so invested in trying to make this a beautiful time for you, as they should, so just switch to someone else. Chances are, they won't even miss you. Enable yourself to enjoy your pregnancy!!!

That's crazy! Why would they reprimand you? I've had so many "stupid" questions but that's their job! to make us feel better...they get paid tons from our insurance companies and us! I'm sorry you are dealing with that. It seems like a legitimate question to me, and hey, did they ever tell you not to check it? No, so how can they be upset that you did?

I ended up calling the nurse's station. I told her what I was experiencing and she YELLED at me for checking it. Seriously lady, I'm not the only first time pregnant woman who has stupid questions so don't treat me like I am. I told her that it's shorter than usual and open and she didn't seem concerned at all, but offered to make me an appt to see another doctor in my doctor's practice because she won't be available. I agreed, and now I just feel stupid and I'm sure my doctor will reprimand me too when I see her.

Hey,

I would call the doctors to be sure. When I had the bleeding they said that it wasn't open at all, not even a fingertip, and that seemed good news. But maybe a fingertip is still okay? It's better to doublecheck with the doctors in case there is something they can do to make it better if it's an issue. Everyone always assures me that they are used to getting a million questions and that they would rather you double check than not check at all.
