Q: Can a Pelvic Exam before 12 weeks cause a miscarriage?

I'm 4 weeks and 4 days pregnant :) and I want to call and make my first appointment, but the other day while getting some pointers from an acquaintance who is pregnant with her 3rd (second lost to m/c @ 8 weeks) I was told NOT to let the dr. do a pelvic exam because it can cause a m/c. She said she had a m/c the day after her appointment. When my dr. called to confirm my blood test results he said he would like for me to make my first appointment at around 8 weeks. I don't want to postpone my appointment against his advice and miss an opportunity to hear the baby's heartbeat. I also feel like the sooner I see the doctor, the sooner I will feel better about my pregnancy and not be so worried all the time!! Does anyone have any stories, or advice related to this?

I went to the hp due to cervical injury.. I kept telling them my cervix hurt.. I didn't know that they would do an internal exam for this.. they did and then I had an ultra sound and before I left the hp my body started to abort my baby..no longer than 15 mins after the exam I got severe pain almost like contractions.. I was at the hp for 3 hours and then dark red blood started just pouring out.. I got home and miscarried within 4 hours.. wish I would've just stayed home took Tylenol and stayed in the tub for a bit to relieve pressure.. they didn't do anything for me.. but told me my blood count was perfect and that they didn't know why these things happened.. by the way if people are miscarrying right after internal exams yes come out and say so.. do not let these people feel like you are crazy absolutely it s not okaii to take cervical damage during weeks that you're cervix is trying to strengthen.. its ridiculous how some of you think nothing of it..

please don't let them do an internal as I made the mistake of letting them do one and I later miscarried. When I was expecting my second child I was going to let the doctor do an internal and she said to me that we don't do internals as we found out that it could cause miscarriage. So if you want to avoid pain and heartbreak refuse the internal at all costs

Five healthy pregnancies with the same practice. I went to a new practice at 10 weeks 5 days with my sixth pregnancy and had a pelvic exam. My exam was painful and I felt the Doctor was a little rough. He told me everything was good/felt in order. Within 30 minutes after leaving the office I started having really painful cramps which soon subsided. The next day I had some light bleeding which from experience I know can be normal from an internal exam. Early morning the second day I started miscarrying. All my blood work came back normal and I know my baby was growing accordingly. I know in my heart the pelvic exam caused trauma to the fetus. The next time I will decline a pelvic exam.

Most OB's will pressure you to do a pap and have a pelvic to make money. Paps are only recommended by the cancer associations, every 3 years but 99% of docs will tell you to get one every year. I had a painful pap and pelvic at 6 weeks and started to miscarry later than day. The day my exam and hcg levels were perfect, until they killed my baby. There is no need for a pelvic until delivery. An ultrasound at the 3rd or 6th month can test for genetic abnoralities. Lessons learned too late. I said no three times and they pressured me into it by saying my baby might be born blind if I did not get the pap to test for problems.

I also had my pap smear at 10 weeks, it can cause the cervix to bleed was what i was told. AND i was glad i had it done because they found abnormal cells on my cervix so i wouldn't have known about these cells and may not have been checked out.
Doctors wouldn't do it if they thought there was any chance of miscarriage.

Hello - my midwife waited until my second appointment to do the exam - i was about 9 weeks pregnant. She did say that sometimes early paps can cause problems.

Hi! I asked this question last night, and I though I was logged in, but I guess I was not! Oops!
You're right, and I totally understand why she (the friend) would feel that way, having had that happen to her, i'd be afraid of having a pelvic exam too... but i kind of feel like if a miscarriage is going to happen, its going to happen, and the last person I should be worried about causing one is my doctor. They don't get paid to end people pregnancies, they get paid to help, heal and deliver babies! So I went ahead and made my appointment, I'll be just about 9 weeks, and i'm confident everything will be fine!
Thank you for your answer though!
Good Luck to you too!!

Getting a pelvic exam is completely normal during your 1st trimester.
I obviously don't want to talk about your friend badly, but I highly doubt her MC was caused by the exam. Miscarriages are extremely common. I have had one, but also have 4 of my close friends. About 15% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and about 50-75% of them are during the first trimester. They're horrible but they are common.
I'm also 4 weeks and this is my 2nd pregnancy and will be seeing my doctor tomorrow (I'm considered high risk for other reasons)
Good luck! BUT please don't be worried about the exam. :)
