Q: What to do?

We found out in March that we're expecting. In May, my MIL said that she had bought the changing table for all of her grandchildren, and she wanted to do it for our baby too. She told me to start looking and let her know.
I ordered my crib in July, and set it up and had put pics on FB. She commented on it to find a changing table to match and she'd order it. I found one, and DH let her know. She just shrugged it off.
We went to visit the first part of August, and she mentioned all of these bills that were coming due. I'll be 30w in a couple of days, and nothing else has been mentioned. DH just keeps telling me to leave it alone. What would you do? Would you go buy one yourself, ask MIL, etc? Either way, my son needs a changing table!!

I d buy the changing table I wanted and mention to your mil that you have bought it. That way your mil can choose to pay you back or make a contribution. It may be that she cant afford too, so will save any embarassment on her part that she may not want to say about and you get the changing table you want.
I want one as a changing table, for storage and just to finish the nursery off in making it look lovely. Its not the fact of 'needing one' or not, its that you want one and your mil said she would purchase it.

I haven't got a changing table. I just bought a good changing mat that i place on the couch or floor (or bed at night time) to change him. Does the job!!!

My MIL did the same thing when I was preg with my last baby (her 1st grandchild) we went and bought a crib and with it costing so much ($600 crib) we couldnt afford the mattress at the same time, so she said she would buy it...we set the crib up without a mattress and she kept saying she was going to get it finally when I was 35 weeks I went and bought it myself, we didnt even tell her we went and bought it and she still never offered to get it I had my baby 2 weeks later at 37 weeks...so if I wouldnt have gotten it myself baby would have came home to no mattress in his bed!

Trust me, you want to have good communication between you and your MIL, especially with your lo on the way, so I would just ask her outright. Nothing to worry about, just a simple, "you mentioned before about getting the changing table, are you still able to help us with that?" Hopefully she will be honest if some financial problem is keeping her from doing it, maybe she'd be able to split it with you.

"my son needs a changing table!!"
Is an over statement lol
Your son doesnt need one and neither do you!
Its perfectly okay to change him...ANYWHERE. The floor, the couch, your lap.

actually changing tables are very unnecessary :) he doesn't NEED a changing table. im actually not even buying one this time, because, being a mom 2x, I realized they aren't mandatory :) but! you can bug her again about it, no worries, or you can buy one, i know what it's like to be a first time momma and think things like that are important, it's important to you and thats what matters.

If she offered to buy one for you & you were counting on that I would ask her. I know that I would not go without a change table, my home is very small and I plan on using it a lot. My MIL offered to buy our stroller and car seat for us. I purchased it online and sent her the bill and she just transfered the money back to my account. I would probably have your husband say something again about how you found one you liked but word it like this " We found the perfect change table for our nursery, did you want us to order it give you the bill or would you like to order it for us? Let us know what is easier for you" That's what my husband said when we found our stroller. If she doesn't end up buying it at least change tables aren't too expensive, but I understand your dilemma. Good luck :)

It's just my two cents, but most of my friends have found changing tables to be pretty useless pieces of furniture. You can always buy a portable change pad that you can put on any solid surface - floor, bed, table, dresser top, etc. - and then you'll be prepared in case you don't receive a change table. I know a lot of people like to have them, but I don't think it's a must-have item in terms of baby's health and safety, so I would just leave it.

If you really, really want one, you could always buy a used one (yard sales and craigslist are great for that stuff) and then it wouldn't be a bit waste of money if your MIL doesn't come through for you.
