Q: Cloth diapering?

I'm considering maybe using cloth diapers. All of my friends are using the disposable diapers which work fine but seem costly over time. I heard that ''it works well'' if you use disposable for the first 6 months then switch to cloth ones (and that it also helps potty training). What are your experiences? Pros+Cons?

I use cloth diapers. I LOVE them! To answer a question above, no they do not leak (or are not suposed to) leak through to the babies clothes. You either use ones that have a biult in water-proof layer (pockets or all-in-ones) or your put a waterproof cover over them. Disposables have many cuastic chemicals in them, I choose not to expose my babies to that. The washin isnt that bad. Just empt wet bad into washer and wash. As far as the poop, i use biodegradable liners until the baby has solid poops you can just shake of into the toilet. The liners are thin, soft material that you just remove and flush so the is no scraping, dunking, or wiping of the poo involved. lol Go to TheClothDiaperWhisperer.com....will be able to answer most of your questions. Good luck!

I was originally going to use CD but then I read on an environmental site that because of all the washing, etc. its actually worse on the environment. This was 3 1/2 yrs ago so I don't remember where I read this. I got my diapers from Costco or Diapers.com. Best of luck whatever you decide!

a question for those who use cloth , when the baby wees or poos does it go right through to there clothes?

and to answer question, I have only ever used disposable, never even thought about it, I don't think it will affect potty training, that depends on how much effort you put into it, and if your child is ready, my first was using the potty at 12 months big toilet at 14 months and he has never ever in his life wet the bed he is 7 now, I only personally know 1 person who has used cloth nappies, and they loved them, you could try them for a while see how you go you could always change to disposable.

I used cloth nappies in the hospital as thats what they promoted, and it was fine since they did the washing of them.... but I used disposable when i got home! personally the things I see coming out of my baby I'm pretty happy to throw it away...just my opinion!

I used cloth diapers with my first. He was potty trained day time/nap time by 14 months, and day/night/and naps by 18 months. I used prefolds + covers, or just pinned prefolds at home. Best thing ever. My current stash is 36 Newborns ($2 bucks each!!!) and 40 infant sized for .67 cents each! I got them used <3. So my favortie parts about cloth are: 1. they dont stink (trust me, disposables STINK) 2. they are cheap 3. you don't have to go to a store to buy more when you run out... you always have them. 5. they arent filled with nasty chemicals, glues, synthetic fragrances etc. that can contaminate your babies body. 6. i like to wear cloth underwear, i certainly would rather wear a cloth underwear then plastic/paper underwear. 7. baby ever had a rash.

I can't give you any "experience" advice but I am planning on using CDs myself this time around & I was CLUELESS! I highly advise going on Facebook & finding a local CD group....I did (Chicago) & not only have I gotten great advice but I've also been to 2 swap/sales in the last month & started building my supply for a fraction of new cost! Also, since they are used, they are all well laundered so you don't have to do any of the prep work involved (new ones have to be washed 5-7 times before use) Good luck!!!
