Asked by Cockroach

Q: Have any of you dyed your hair while pregnant?

All of my sites/books said it was safe, so I went ahead and did it, trusting them. Now I'm on the internet reading that it COULD be bad, to use semi-permanent, and that shades of black are the worse.
Well, I used permanent and a neutral black shade. I wouldn't dare lighten, because my hair is about one shade away from black naturally.
I was just feeling down about my looks and wanted a change, but now I feel awfully guilty and like I screwed up.
Have any of you done an all over single process? I'm 26 weeks now, I figured it'd be safe.

Hi, I asked the nurse at my doctor's practice, I have known her for 20 years, she said hair dying is no problem.

Thanks so much ladies :D I feel much better now. Mrs.Mom, I thought the same thing! Our shampoo, conditioner, body wash, perfumes, lotions, foundations, ALL of those contain chemicals that COULD cause trouble, but ya don't see people telling us not to use that stuff!
Guess I was just worried because there are always two different opinions on EVERYTHING in pregnancy! First I read it was safe, then all the sudden it's safe unless it's a shade of black...which makes no sense because they all have the same amount of crap in them. I'm just going to assume this one time color, one week shy of my 3rd trimester, is okay. Thanks again :D

I have read up on this and in my book "what to expect when you're expecting" states there is no definite answer, but that it's best to wait until you are out of your first trimester. After that, you're good. I know many women who have died their hair several times throughout their pregnancy and baby always turns out fine. I started getting my hair done again around the 5 month mark. So far I've done it twice and I plan on doing it once more (I'm 38 week on saturday). I do highlights so the dye doesn't go directly onto my scalp so I feel perfectly safe doing it. Also...there are a ton of chemicals in shampoo/condition that we use every day. I wouldn't worry about it at all :)

I dyed mine at 12 weeks, everything is fine. I think you do end up living in a bubble if you follow everything! :)

Gemma - thank you! I guess my hormones must have gotten BETTER since the last time I dyed my hair a few years back, because it took it like a champ and was on for half the recommended time! I should also add I didn't use out of the box stuff. I never use that, I always use professional level stuff. The room was very well ventilated, we STILL have a fan pointing outwards to blow it out, and I did it last night, and the windows open. I hate the smell of the junk anyway!
However, I chose to do this so late because I figured I wouldn't need my next touch up until after she is born - if I even choose to dye it again. Usually one coat of black keeps me good until summer comes around and the sun bleaches it to a lighter shade of brown again.

I got the same list, and it seemed okay. But I don't see how dye could be any different than lotion, which isn't rinsed off shortly after being applied or certain make ups.
Gina - it wasn't so much that, as I honestly love my big ol' belly, but my hair has gotten so DULL since getting pregnant! It was still thick, but the color and texture just went nuts on me. Plus, I don't see how make up can be any better, because I know that doesn't contain the most friendly of chemicals either. I just got really tired of being told NO on everything. There is so much we aren't allowed to eat or drink or do these days and it's driving me up a wall. My mom ate sandwiches and candy with my brothers and myself and we turned out fine! I love being pregnant, but at the rate the "it's not safe" thing is going, we're going to be stuck with flavorless wafers and juices for 9 months, all while living in a bubble. I needed to be bad but now I feel bad! XD

I got a list of oks and not oks from my OB group when I went in for my first prenatal appointment and dying hair was listed as ok to do during pregnancy.

Honestly I haven't because I was a little scared of this. And everything I read said that while there isn't anything out there proving it is dangerous, there isn't anything that really proves it's safe, either. Don't stress yourself out about it too much, there's really nothing you can do about it now. Maybe next time opt for a new hair style instead of a color? Or get some new make up to make yourself feel a little better. I completely understand what you're going through. Just want something to make yourself feel a little less... large? :)
