It is a test that can detect chromosomal abnormalities in your baby, and also detects some birth defects. It is an invasive test and it does carry some risk of miscarriage. Also, many of the problems that the test looks for can be detected later by studying the baby's spine on an ultrasound. I would never choose to do this kind of testing on my baby because 1. I am at low risk of carrying a baby with any of those problems. and 2. because even if my baby is sick, that would not change my mind about having it, loving it, raising it, taking care of it. There is no point, in my mind, to do such risky things to my baby during pregnancy.
