Q: Best bottles for breastfeeding

I'm planning on breastfeeding and looking at a Medela manual pump (or whatever my insurance will cover, hopefully). I was wondering what bottles you found most useful. Should I go with the Medela bottles, the drop-in bottles, or something else entirely? And how many should I get?

Hi,
I am a NICU nurse and feed difficult and unhealthy babies all day... The idea of nipple confusion is actually more about FLOW confusion. Breastfeeding provides a slow flow that the baby must "work for" to get milk. Whatever bottle you use, buy a premmie or slow-flow nipple (available online and at babies r us) so the flow of milk is most like the breast. And for what its worth, I have had the most success with playtex vent air bottles, few parts, easy to clean, and babies LOVE them. Also when you bottle feed put the baby in the same position as breastfeeding (on his side, facing slightly up). Our unit has tons of success with babies transitioning from breast to bottle and back to breast will little trouble!!!
Congrats on your new baby!

I have 4 kiddos & swear by the playtex drop ins. They r worth every penny not having 2 steralize constantly & r wonderful when traveling. Not 2 mention that any excess air can be squeezed out, & bag will collapse as baby drinks eliminating tons of gas bubbles. I love them! & the shape of the nipple is nice 4 less air as well. Mine did ok w/ them while nursing. But ultimately its going 2 be whatever u find wrks 4 u & baby both. Whatever bottle u decide on may have 2 change depending on baby as well. But id start w/ @ least 8 bottles. GL!

The glass enflow bottles can be attached to the Medela pump in place of the medela bottles. These are very reasonable in price too.

We have been told to get a couple different types of bottles and see what baby likes best. So far we have 2 different sizes of Dr. Browns Natural flow and Tommee Tippee.

We were also told by our lactation consultant not to introduce bottles until 4-6weeks to help avoid nipple confusion.

I have the medela pump in style and got the playtex drop in starter kit which came with adaptors to make it work with this pump. So it worked out great for me less bottles to clean. My son was breastfed for 14 months and we never had an issue with nipple confusion! I think bottles is all a matter of preference so just think of what bottle would fit best into your lifestyle and what you want for your baby.

I have a Medella pump (FYI, you can buy a used one off Craigslist for way cheaper if your insurance doesn't cover it, the only parts that come in contact with you are replaceable, so you're just paying for the pump) and am exclusively breastfeeding. We've had no problem with the Tommy Tippee bottles from day one. No feeding issues or colic (we got the anti-colic bottles).

Medela bottles are great, and they are compatible with the pump, so it's really convenient for that.
