IDK if you have any in canada, but I have a 99cent store by my house that I go to a lot, just yesterday I picked up a can of spagettii sauce for 99cents (the hanes brand) and a pack of noodles for 59cents. my son and I love spagettii so we have been eatting it for 2 days now. so worth the $1.60 I spent =-) good luck

Pancake mix from a box, the ready to serve stuff. It comes pretty cheap and is a solid, filling meal made with just water. Cereal is outrageously expensive (here in Canada anyways) but I've found the pancake mix is cheap. I remember years back when my brother worked hard labour and was short on cash and finding it hard to eat enough...I suggested this and it worked wonders for him. He could make a huge, cheap breakfast and have energy to last most of the day.

Cereal...the kids love having cereal for dinner when mommy doesn't feel like cooking!

thanks so much ladies! These answers both help, i was considering avoiding meat for now, because it is quite expensive (im also in canada) and i love the advice on milk! my kids drink it like crazy so this will definitely help save some money. im thinking potatoes, pasta, canned veggies and cereal. ill have to see how far i can stretch this money

I'm also in Canada and food is a bit more expensive here than in the USA. That said, $20 goes a really long way! Buy eggs and beans for your proteins, and skip the meats altogether or as much as possible. If you do want meat, check the 'reduced to clear' racks/areas at your local stores. There you can get meats, produce and bakery goods (like bread) for really cheap and the stuff is usually fine if you cook it within a day or so. Stale bread makes good french toast or can be used to make a very filling pan of stuffing (you don't need a chicken or turkey to eat stuffing!)

I grew up poor, and another good trick is to buy homo milk (3%) and then water it down to the consistency of 1% or so to make it last longer. You can add a fair bit of water without it tasting bad. We also used to eat a lot of cabbage, potatoes, rice, turnip and squash as all of those are super cheap per serving and go a long way.

Good luck!

I coupon everything! Wether its $5.00 off or â?¬0.05 off lol. In Canada we can price match as well, at Walmart. I bring all the sale flyers to Walmart and show them at cash and get my things for the price the other stores have on sale. And a great secret for buying expensive meat, GROUND BEEF! Its cheap and you can make plenty of things outta it like spaghetti, meat loaf, hamburgers, stew, shepards pie and tons of other things. I don't work so I often coupon and stretch out our money to make it less stressful for my fiance. Hope this helps :). Good luck!
