Q: Unpasturized cheese?

Today I was at an expo and there were venders giving out samples of foods. At one of them there was some garlic and herb spreads, crackers and cheeses made by some locals. After trying a sample of their foods I over heard another woman declining their cheese becuase she was pregnant. OMG. I didn't even realize the cheese may not have been pasteurized. It's goat cheese (idk if that makes a difference) and I only had a small, cube size piece, but I'm really worried now. What can happen to my baby if it wasn't pasteurized? Is there any way I can tell? Will symptoms arise to let me know something's wrong? I'm 38 weeks and am frantic thinking I may have hurt my baby! Any recommendations on what I should do from here? Help!

This is what I know about cheese and pregnancy. The bacteria that you can get from some types of "soft cheese" is the Listeria bacteria which can cause Listeriosis. You can get this from the unpasteurized milk that the cheese is made with. Listerisosis can lead to serious problems like miscarriage or stillbirth or can lead to a severe illness in your newborn baby. Not all goats cheese is made from unpasteurized milk though, and since you had such a small amount I'm sure you have nothing to worry about, as the other ladies have said. I know it is hard not to worry but you ate it once and once only. I accidently ate soft serve ice-cream form mcdonalds....whoops. There is so much more food that pregnant people are not allowed to eat these day then there were when our grandmothers were pregnant, and i havnt heard of anyone's baby dying because they ate a slice of cheese..

Paturization kills the bacteria that causes food poisoning. Since pregnant women have weakened immune systems we are advised not to eat it to lessen chance of food poisoning. If you are not feeling sick baby is fine...and even if you felt sick chances are baby is fine. If you feel fle-like symptoms start check with a doc. Till then relax. Chances are the cheese was in fact pasturized since it is so common now a days for foods being served to the public, or sold to public to have to be pasturized as no one wants to hold the liability of having made someone sick! We had the huge beef scare here in Canada in early pregnancy. We'd bought and eaten alot of that beef. We were fine, when I asked my high risk pregnancy dietican if there was a concern she said none-what-so ever. No symtpoms equals no concern, food poisoning is not a silent killer of fetuses the mom gets sick first.

Best thing to do now is relax and take your mind off it so the stress doesn't make you sick with worry!!!

SMH. the only reason its a risk is because of the potential for food poisoning that unpasteurized foods pose, which is statistically more life threatening to pregnant women. are u suffering from food poisoning? No? then you are fine.

I think you will be fine, the odd time won't harm you and it would be you that got sick first.

If your worried, you can contact your doctors office once it opens. It's better safe than sorry. But if your having any flu-like symptoms or a upset stomach within 48 hours of eating the cheese, then you should be seen by a doctor right away.

I'm not positive if it was unpasturized or not, but it was goat cheese and it was not heated. Form that article I should be worried. What signs do I look for that que infection? How long does it take for symptoms to show? Should I contact my doc ASAP? I just don't know how big of a deal this is, but I'd hate to think there's things I could do and find out its too late.

I remember being told unpasturized milk can kill fetus' and new born babies, I'm due in two weeks, so if I were to go into labor now I'm just worried I may pass the infection on the the baby and kill it or something! Is all unpasturized dairy bad, or is it like luck of the draw?

not to scare you anything but, If you eat it unpasteurized food every-day then it would cause an infection and the infection would cause pre-term labor. Since you ate it once accidentally, I don't think you should be worried.
