I'm at 35 weeks now and have gained roughly 30 lbs. I also had the same concerns from the start of my pregnancy. I did not expect to lose weight at the beginning (about 10 lbs). I actually didn't regain that weight until the 20 week mark. Since then I haven't been able to control it at all even with doing yoga and being smart about what I eat. A couple different midwives at the practice said not to worry about it. They offered some suggestions about cutting back on certain foods, but I had one tell me that I am pregnant and eat whatever like and not to be too hard on myself. So enjoy this time and just be smart about what you eat and the activity you do.

You only need an additional 300 calories. So just eat what you like at pretty much the same amount as before and you should be fine.

I have the same fear (for the same reason, my mom gained TOO much weight when she was pregnant with me). My plan is to do a modified south beach diet, which is basically a Mediterranean diet: no sugar except from fruit, whole grains, lean protein, lots of veggies, little or no starches. It's a heart disease/diabetes prevention diet. It goes by the Glycemic Index in foods - anyways, that and maybe Tracy Anderson's Pregnancy Project DVDs (they are very pricey though!). If not workout dvds, then maybe walking/hiking and swimming. I'm planning to take up swimming again.

You probably won't gain any unnecessary weight if you follow something like that :)
