Q: Safe to lose weight during the first trimester?

Changing my daily routine to eating healthy and exercising now that I found out I am pregnant. I am 5'3 and 139 lbs.. by doing this I am sure to drop pounds quickly is this safe? I gained 50 lbs with each of my prior pregnancies and did not lose much of it from the last one. Is it safe to lose weight during the first trimester?

Like the other user said, actively loosing weight in pregnancy is not recomended. Eating healthy and in the right amounts is the most important factor.

Doing exercise won't hurt your baby, walking and walking in the pool are the two I was recommended. If you get into the habit of going for a walk each day then when bubz arrives that will just be part of your routine and it will help you loose the baby weight fast. Just remember with any type of exercise you do while pregnant use the talk test. If you cannot talk out loud easily because your panting then your exercise to hard and you should back off the intensity.

I am obese and my doc told me to eat the number of calories to maintain my current weight plus 100 extra calories in 1st trimester. To go 200 extra a day in 2nd and 3rd trimester. I have been instructed to gain no more than 15 lbs.
(Overweight recommendation is 15-25 and normal size 25-35) It also depends on your risk factors (high risk for diabetes or other health problems) if you are at risk they may ask you to gain less.

That being said I had morning sickness and lost 10 lbs first tri. I am slowly gaining back and at 23 weeks have gotten back 5 lbs of 10. You shouldn't restrict your calories too much to intentionally lose weight but if you mind your calorie intake, exercise and eat as healthy as possible you can be sure to limit your weight gain during pregnancy to a reasonable amount. Most docs recommend you gain at least 15-20 lbs to maintain an normal pregnancy
