Q: 18wks pregnant and waking up at night with numb/tingly hands?

The past few nights now I have woken up during the night with completely numb tingling hands. They don't hurt at all and if I move them around they are back to normal within a minute. After the first couple of times I came to realize that this only happens when I am sleeping on my back but if I fall asleep on my side I just end up waking up on my back and it happens again.Anyone know why this is happening and if it is a cause for concern?

*BUMP* Totally feel ya. I am also 18 weeks (2nd pregnancy) and am startin to get the carpal tunnel syndrome once again. However mine hits me throughout the day:( Had it with my first as well. It is really common and my doc said one of the main reasons is the surplus of blood in our bodies now b/c of the pregnancy. So no need to worry it will typically go away right after delivery, but unfortunately have to live through it in the mean time. My doc suggested to wear wrist splints whenever it is occurring. For you it sounds like at night which is one of the most common. So off and on it sounds awful and non-sexy, but I wear my splints at night sometimes. Hopefully you are able to deal with this and also maybe try samsweitz's ideas with the pillows so you are not on your back:) Hope you get it worked out as much as possible soon and can tolerate yet another symptom of pregnancy:) GL!

its more than likely carpal tunnel syndrome, i developed it with this pregnancy and it is normal. However, try not to sleep on your back anymore. I know it sucks when you wake up and your on your back, i found that a pillow placed behind my back keeps me from doing it or just buy a pregnancy pillow they have some that are in the shape of a huge C and are awesome.
