Huge fan of the meet 'n greet thing. I did that twice for my best friend. We had a shower a few weeks after baby was born so everyone had a chance to meet her babies. The gifts were still great and it stopped a lot of foot traffic of people wanting to come over and meet baby after the birth.
Even though this is our first baby we have a lot of stuff being given to us and/or sold to us very cheaply so we will have a nursery prepped in no time. This also tends to get people to buy things like diapers, wipes, blankets, clothes, and stuff for the "older" months. Great bonus for when you are on mat leave and short some cash :)

i had one at 33 weeks and the other at 35. it still allowed me enough time to go out and buy the stuff we didn't get, return duplicates and get everything ready.

I'll be 37 1/2 weeks when I have mine. Only real reason I'm having mine so late is because my twin sister is coming to visit and she lives on the other side of the country and I wanted her to be here. We joke that I may go in to labour before the shower but I hope not..lol
