They recommend by 20 weeks you should sleep on your sides. You can start early to get used that position.

I guess I should listen to my body on this one! I'm visiting my Mom this week, and at her house I don't have the pleasure of having my pillow top mattress, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

My doctor also said to sleep however I can. It's really hard to get comfortable as you get farther into your pregnancy so if you can find a position (whether it's on your back, left side, right side, or slightly on your stomach) take advantage of it. Most women choose not to sleep on their back because it can be a bit harder to breathe cause baby is pushing up on your lungs and can also cause your feet to fall asleep. But that can also be fixed by laying with a pillow under your knees.

Although I have heard that lying on your left side is better for baby, I honestly just slept how I was comfortable. I know of many many nights where I slept on my back, weirdly enough it was the most comfortable position for me. Anyway I am now a mom of a healthy 5 week old baby so lying on my back caused me no problems. (obviously im not saying that's the way it will be for everyone) my doctor just told me to sleep how I felt comfortable.

I actually asked my doctor this at my 16 week appointment! He says it doesn't really matter until 30 weeks or later. He also said a lot of it will manage itself because it will become uncomfortable to be on your back.

My Dr told me it didn't really matter. Left side is preferred, but sleep however is comfortable. I'm 25 weeks and i fall asleep on my side and wake up on my back every night. He said your body would let you know if your baby was in any real danger of not getting enough oxygen you'd feel nauseated and out of breath long before your baby would have a problem.

the blood flow gets compressed when lying on your back, due to the weight of your uterus and baby compressing on a main artery
